Post Lap Band Surgery Dehydration Problems

Recommended Posts

Hi, my name is Becky. I had the lap band surgery performed by Dr. Soong on November 22, 2011. My first week was very succesful, I lost 14 lbs.

However the second week I ended up in intensive care, completely dehydrates with diabetic ketosis. This is not what I expected. I have been out of the hospital for 3 days now. I am still fighting with dehydration issues again.

Has anybody else had this problem or have any suggestions. I am following the diet to the t and drinking plenty of liquids.

I am very happ to say I am down 18lbs but don't have any energy to do anything.

As a 20 year former diabetic, I'm sure many post op banders occasionally suffer from hypoglycemia. You need to

keep checking blood sugar levels, if you have a meter, and if you find yourself becoming shaky, sweaty with a

very dry mouth and of course hungry, you should find a source of glucose, fruit juice, table sugar, even candy in small

amounts, until the symptoms go away. You gradually get used to the lower blood sugar levels, mine began at

160 to 180, now 80 to 100 on no meds at all. We all need to be aware of sugar levels for a few months and a few

pounds, hopefully. Blood sugar levels below 50 are dangerous, but normally, we don't have to be worried about

that except in extreme cases. If a person is diabetic, at this stage, you'll certainly know it. If you're drinking about

64oz of Water a day, you shouldn't be dehydrated, if you are, you should be under medical care. I wish you all the

best and hope you have a successful weight loss experience.

For extreme fatigue, our program recommended Vitamin B12.< /em>

I hope this helps.

There are pkenty of low carbers around ho will tell you ketosis is a good thing and the way your body is meant to run. Now you know just how dangerous and stupid tha is. You cannot live on Protein alone, you need good carbs too and at this stage even yogurt, pudding and custard are acceptable. Blend som frui into purprotein shakes for example.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
