New Here-questions-sorry If You Have Heard Them, But There Is A Lot To Dig Through

Recommended Posts

Hi there. Newbie here.

I have only scheduled my education class for the 14th of Decemver in Houston. I don't know what goes on there. I have a friend that had the surgery and she also has the same insurance through the same company (we work together @ the same job). We were at similar weigh at the beginning. I am around the 200 mark. I am worried that my chances.

I have had weight issues for quite some time. I went so far as to having an extensive tummytuck and flankplasty as well as breast reduction in hopes that would fix my form. I have only grown....rounder. Although I have dropped some in the past it all comes back with a vengence.

I was at a crossroads. My weight has taken over my life and everything about it. socially, romantically and everything else. This has to happen.

I am just afraid that insurance will not think 200 is severe enough, although it was for my friend. I do have severly high cholesterol and have been on and off BP meds. I am borderline diabetic with history in the family with my father being diabetic. I also have polysictic ovarial syndome (is that how it is spelled, or pcos?, as well as stage 4 endometriosis). I could benifit from a sleep study, as I never sleep.

I am also a flight attendant. We are paid for many things, and one of those things is to look somewhat attractive on the aircraft. Although I believe I am attractive in some ways, I do not have the confidence that 99% of our work group do to sit on the jumpseats without taking up too much space. Running down the aisles without taking someone out. I get hot and sweaty due to the weight and that is embarrassing.

I am with UHC. They do cover it my Dr.'s sweet desk lady says she called for me today. I work for a major airline and I wonder if the motivation to have us look up to standards is why my friend was approved so very quickly 2 years ago. Do you think this could affect my ruling?

Now what. Seminar the 14th:

Gonna post some before pics, if i can find one that I havent hacked my body out of.

Thanks!

In my opinion, a BMI of 35 or greater, diagnosed diabetes and sleep apnea should be enough to qualify you for

WLS surgery, with most insurance companies. Any other comorbidities would only strengthen your case.

Please keep posting here and keep us informed as to your progress. Good luck.

Hi there! Let me first start out by saying you are gorgeous. There, now thats out of the way.I'm gonna make this short and sweet cause I'm typing to you from a phone that likes to over auto correct me and typing a lot takes too long. Insurance approval is based on you bmi, and whether you have obesity related conditions, termed co-morbidities...whci you do have, high bp, pre diabetic etc. You need to figure out your bmi, and then find out from there if you qualify. Given the time of day, you probably won't be reaching an insurance co now, but I was able to find that info on my insurance co website, and the people that work at the Dr office typically know that info off the top of their head.

Secondly, once you figure out if you le insurance covers the surgery, you need to find out whatbyou need to do as far as pre-approval steps. Sometimes the insurance co wants yu to go on a supervised diet for a certain amnt of time, yadda yadda. The lady at the dr office should know that as well.

Thirdly and perhaps most importantly, you have to be ready to go to a LOT of appts. Take a look at my signature, its a LOT of appts. But the good thing is, everything gets checked out, the tests are easy for the most prt, except for the dreaded sleep stdy...and you end up finding out just how healthy, or unhealthy you are. Don't get scared. Just make one appt after another into you're done. There is a light synthesis end of the tunnel. If you need help, or have more questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'm no expert, not even banded yet, but I will do my best to help you. I know what is like to be the girl with the "pretty face"....now its time for us to have smokin bods too!

well it is covered at bmi of 35 with co-morbidities. I may be at the very cusp of 35 at my heigh and weight, like a lb or 2 less. Guess it's not the time to start that diet right now. When do you do your 1st "official weigh in" for approval submission?

When I went to my first seminar, they were booking appts for the nutritionist on the spot, so I went the next day. that was when I was weighed for the first time. Embarassing but I've grown very used to being poked prodded and weighed. Lol.

So I supposed I should EAT. I wanna be in that 35 bmi not a fraction below it. does that sound terrible. My PCP did recommend it years ago, so I figure if she thinks I am a candidate, then I should hopefully beat this thing,

Ok I'm gonna be a Debbie downer but have you really thought about what it takes to be successful with the lapband? It takes work and it's not a cure for anything. I just get a little alarmed when I see people that has had other weight loss surgeries or plastic surgery and still haven't been successful in losing weight.

Have you tried dieting and excersize? Did you know that some lapband doctors push for a low carb or restrictive diet? Why not try a serious work out and diet plan with a nutrtionalist? Cause with the band you will be restricted and advised to workout. It's all about changing your life. Just think about it.

Ankle wieghts might work or just fudge the height check. You can just slink down a little and lower your height an inch or so. That should get you where you need to be.

I understand your concern, and I have been VERY restrictive on diet. AND, I exercise a lot not to mention my job is labor intensive. I have gone low carb, which works to a point, and the plateau and can never round that corner, plus I just can't get down to where I need to be.

I REQUIRED the reduction.Period. The TT was sort of a spur of the moment thing. The 'lap band was recommended to me by my PCP years ago. When she did, I was offended, and left angry. After years of trying other ways, I have come to the conclusion that this si the right thing to do. Everyone in my life has seen my struggle. I eat less than everyone I am with, yet I still remain at 200 @ 5'4. My bloods been checked for everything possible.

I could go on, bu thtere is no need. Everyone here has their own reason, and to me, mine is just as valid.

I also have both endo and pcos. My gyn said it is unusual for someone to have both. PCOS makes it very difficult to lose weight and to maintain the loss. I have only been banded a month, so I can't comment as to the long term success of the band for me.

So far, I am down 20 lbs and I am waiting for my first fill. This has been the easiest and most natural weight loss that I have experienced. I am confident that the band will be the tool that will finally help me to lose the weight and maintain the loss.

Regarding the pre-insurance approval, preop weigh-ins, instead of doing all the tricks I used to do to reduce residual weight at the doctors (emptying pockets, wearing light weight cotton clothing, scheduling appointments in the morning and not eating or drinking, and wearing light weight foam shoes), I did the opposite.

I wore jeans to every preop appointment. I kept my keys and change in my pocket. Since it is winter, you could wear hiking boots to your appointments.

Good luck with your band journey.

Wow, I did not expect to hear from someone else suffering from endo and pcos like I do. Ain't it a b***h? I have had several surgeries and, at 37 my doc wants to remove everything. It makes it very difficult, yet none of those things are factored in for ins purposes. I am tired of taking the meds for it too and hope for some relief for that. Doc wants to add on a cholesterol pill as it is alarmingly high. At 37 I should not have to be on 10+ meds a day.

I am so glad to hear from you and so glad to hear of your success. Please keep me posted! Or add me as a friend if you can. I haven't made it that far! ha

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
