How long to wait for an unfill?

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone! I'd like some information.

I got a fill today (my fourth) and tonight my band is really tight. It's not so tight that I can't get down liquids, but it's not far from it. This is the first time that I've gotten a fill and felt like I had no choice but to stick to the liquids-only diet for a day or two (I've done it before, but not because I couldn't eat--I chose not to). If the band stays this tight, I'll need an unfill.

BUT I also know that there's sometimes swelling after a fill. So here's my question: how long should I wait to see if the excessive-feeling tightness is due to swelling or is because the band is too tight? Three days? Four? A week?

I'd also be interested in any stories from people who felt like this and then had it go away (or had it get worse--I'm interested in any information!).

Is it worth it to call my dr.? Or should I wait a few days and see what happens? What would you do?

I'm a week out and still feeling really tight. I am seriously considering going in for an unfill... but I am not 100% sure.

betheboo: Have you been on liquids the whole time? Or have you been able to eat solid food some?

I am always on the tight side

When I get filled, it takes a few days to a week for the swelling to go down.

So its liquids for 3 days, mushies for a day, then try food.

If after a week, you are to tight to tolerate it, then go in for a un fill.

As you lose weight, and your stomach shrinks, that band will become loser.

So I am tight in the Morning, Early Afternoon.

But come the evening when this opens up, I can eat, and get my nutrition in.

I'm not hungry ! So that's a good thing.

This morning I was able to eat a Jumbo Poached Egg, and I am content with that.

Yesterday it rained all day long. I could not eat a thing until the evening.

The weather, and stress can play a big part in that band tightening up on you.

Just thought I would pass this along.

Don't mess around with your band being too tight. Call your doctor tomorrow, if you haven't already, and ask him/her what to do. The easiest way to mess up your band is by keeping it too tight. It's worth at least a call to the dr.'s office to find out if you need to get an unfill. And, if you do need one, do what you can to get in right away for it.

I hope that helps -- and good luck with the unfill!

Catherine

Wait 3-4 days and then reassess. If still too tight, then go to your dr

Hi Lizzy. I have had multiple unfills and fills. My doctor here in Missouri who has been absolutely wonderful says that if I am having problems with drinking liquids I need to let him know asap. There shouldn't be that much swelling. I have the problem that my port becomes tighter sometimes a week later. Currently I am at a stuck point. I have lost 61 pounds since surgery on march 16th. I have been a steady loser except for the problems the last couple of months. However I have great supportive doctor and PA that I can call or talk to any time. Don't wait call and get some Fluid out.

Yeapers been on liquids the whole time :( I've lost 8 lbs this week! I am actually going to see my doctor tomorrow to have a slight unfill. Sucks b/c it's a 2 and a 1/2 hr drive each way to go to my doctor. But I am getting really sick of smoothies and Water :o . Hoping to feel better by the end of the weekend!

I'm actually feeling better tonight. The band is tight, but I don't think it's too tight now. I've been able to eat solid food in small amounts, so I think everything will be okay. I'm going to give it the weekend and see how I feel Monday.

I hope that you can get eh same results that Betheboo did. She had slight unfill and feels better, now! Karen

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
