Do any of you eat like this?

Recommended Posts

Any diet that avoids fruit but encourages bacon just isnt healthy! Carbs are not the only thing that defines a healthy food and a healthy diet is about balance even if you like to low carb. Did you know that the association between processed meats like bacon and ham and bowel cancer is so strong that current recommendations recently declared are to not eat those foods at all?

Wheteher you eat carbs or not, fresh and unprocessed is the way to go.

Low carb by no way means eating, bacon, ham, or any other processed meats to most of us. It means eating lean Protein first, then veggies, including legumes, which have carbs, and lowfat dairy, also good carbs. I personally don't eat any red meat, my surgeon's suggestion, and my choice. I actually have always preferred fish and chicken over beef and pork. Let's not be quick to judge because it's not what we do. We are all so different. Eating this way immediately lowered my insulin needs by half! That's before any weight loss at all! I am now taking one fifth of the daily insulin I was taking

before my pre op diet.

In summary - Everyone is different and we all succeed in different ways. The important thing is that we all succeed!!!!!

Remember to follow YOUR dr and nuts rules! That's what you paid them for

I'm just recently banded and my head is whirling. This is what my doctor told me when I asked him what kind of diet I would be following post lapband. He asked me to name a few of the diets I had been on: Low carb, lowfat, high Protein, etc. He asked me if any of those had worked long term for me? Well, no Doc, that's why I'm here getting surgery. He said, Ok, you are officially done with diets. You will eat what you feel like eating, but only until you feel satisfied, and that doesn't mean stuffed. He said he will adjust the band to make it possible for me to still eat and lose weight. Im taking him at his word. We'll see how it goes.

I actually do follow that plan. My surgeon and nutritionist were on the same page about the diet - - Protein, then veggies, then fruit. I asked my nutritionist for snack suggestions a few weeks ago and she said to add in a piece of cheese if I was hungry between meals, or a yogurt. They are the only non-original-plan items that I have.

I know I could eat more variety, but right now this is working for me.

WOW - I don't believe he could be that naive! We got heavy eating what we feel like eating! Granted the band will restrict how much we eat but I think more guidance would have been helpful! We can eat sugar and ice cream etc. but if you take this time to retrain your tastebuds you'll lose more weight faster! The "rules" say eat protein first - that way you have room for the most important thing in your diet. Lean protein - like fish, chicken and turkey if you can digest that. At first SOFT Proteins are best - fish, cottage cheese, and Greek yogurt come to mind. Good luck with your weight loss journey but honestly Dcotors like yours makes the SUPPORT GROUPS very important... Linda

i am typing this as i am eating a yummy pizza :)

my doc said the same thing, eat what you like, just keep away from high sugar liquids and sweets and ice cream. i am a carb addict so that isn't a tought guideline to follow. he said to keep tightening it. i have only had 4 fills i should be getting more but it's hard to arrange appointments for me i travel a lot snd so does the doc. but slowly my intake has gone down from 25 sushi pieces to 8-10 now, from a whole pizza for lunch then a big dinner down to 3 slices and little or no dinner.

i tried to 'diet' but felt hugely guilty after every meal and was miserable and obbsessed about weight. now i only weigh myself every 10-14 days, i forget about dieting and i stopped checking this forum because i was chastized for eating carbs. i've lost 30 pounds so far. granted that is only like a pound a week and when i checked this website i felt hugely inadequate and miserable. but what works for others doesn't work for me. i wish it did, would have probably lost double by now but i'd rather have the best of both worlds a little bit of food and a slow weightloss.

maybe i would have felt different if i were much bigger, but i am a size 14 now which is tolerable, so i'm ok with taking it slow.

i am not saying anyone should do that. but i think you should listen to yourself and your doctor not others. especially people on this forum. not many will respect a differing point of view. i respect the no-carb diet and respect those who do it, but it seems like it doesn't roll both ways in this forum.

but just to comfort you a little about what's next i am a very 'lazy' bandster but still there are foods you will no longer be interested in. bread for one! pizza is like a once in two weeks craving for me, rice no longer interests me. burgers, haven't wanted them for a loong time, same for Bagels. anything fried is no longer interesting. for me its the Pasta, pizza and sushi that i still eat, but now i love zuccini, veggie Soups which i never used to eat. your taste jt changed and you don't feel deprived.

the band really helps! i love it :) i just finished 90 mins of tango followed by 60 mins of hip hop and walked briskly home in 20 min and i feel awesome!

get 4 fills as quick as you can, that's when my band started really helping.

I've had to eat my words, lol! I dont think that's on ANY diet, nor is humble pie!

I got sent to another dietician and she's been fantastic - but my issues are not about weight loss, they're about food intolerances.

I am in fact on a diet that, technically, limits fruit but not bacon (which I dissed back on page 1). No wheat, no lactose, low fodmap (which limits a whole ton of fruit - I've got fructose malabsorption too - some vegies, totally bans wheat, rye, barley, oats, legumes and onions and garlic).

But the point of it is to limit IBS type symptoms and get my damaged bowels back to working somewhat happily. Its not about weight loss or even what's best for health. My guts would be happy if I stuck to bacon, cheese gluten free bread and mashed potatoes but that would be horrible for my weight and health!

So you have to use your brains a bit - the way you interpret your instructions can be really healthy or it can be truly awful. I've managed to still find a good healthful, Protein focussed lower carb lifestyle within my limitations.

I hope no one takes this an attack on anyone in the group! I know there are doctors doing the surgeries and then they let people loose without much guidance as we get them in our local support group. I eat thin crust pizza and other carbs - not everyday but I do eat them...I was just reporting what had worked for me when I was first banded - protein first...ANYTHING else AFTER! Had I had a doctor like that and no support group I probably wouldn't have lost as much weight as I have...just wanted to clarify my point. Linda

You may find this information helpful

http://drsimpson.net...estriction.html

This link is very good as it explains why restriction is NOT the goal of the lapband. I'm over 18 months out of surgery and this explains better than a lot of my visits with my doctors office what I should have been told! Click the link for a very good good explaination! I bookmarked it so I can go back and read the other pages too...good luck all on our weight loss journey! Linda

So with the nuts thing ever since i started this lap band journey i was told that nuts would be hard to eat just because they dont digest very well but if you have been doing it and been fine then i say go for it. My other issue with all of this is this all sounds sooooooooooo crazy. " Your allowed to have this this and that but not this or that" Screw a bunch of this (Sorry, anger coming out) If you have to be on that strict of a diet why the F would you get the lapband! Why not just diet! Im sorry but im not a diet person and thats exactly why i got the lapband, whenever i can start eating food again, Im still on liquids, I will not eat the way you guys are talking! It just sounds so crazy to me! I got the lapband to have Portion Control, not portion control of veggies and crap but portion control of all of the delicious bad foods i eat, and i plan to keep it that way. If i would have to eat the way everyone is talking then i would just do that and not spend money on the lapband. Just saying!

you sound like you have a great attitude. keep it up and you will succeed. no wait, you already are. i am in total agreement with your post.

having less appetite means serving myself 3 spoons or rice as opposed to a whole bowl, restriction/less appetite translate into the same thing. but expecting the band to tell you you've had enough food is unrealistic. it willl give you subtle signals and will be an experience. many times while adjusting to a fill i get up and start walking and feel stabbing pain in my side, then i know i ate too much, and i note that next time i should order less or serve myself less and i do. trial and error. having less appetite also helps you make much better decisions. i no longer feel that kind of hunger that makes me want to devour a turkey. it's a very subtle sign of hunger. that helps a lot with sticking to recommended serving sizes when you want to.

imy goal is to have the yummiest things that 1200-1500 calories a day can buy me and i'll be one happy girl! that translates into a 1-2 pound weightloss a week, which is awesome. it's been 7.5 months for me, usually by that time i would have gotten bored, felt deprived or been hating my life, instead i don't even know how i lost weight! all i remember of the last months is being satisfied and happy with what i eat and having no feelings of deprivation whatsoever. and i am still pumped and ready for those 3 inches i need to lose to fit into my bridesmaid's dress in november.

i have read success stories in both low carb and Portion Control diets both equally as impressive. at the end of the day it boils down to you deciding to eat better, once you decide the band will help you. if you don't decide to do so the band won't decide for you.

i been looking for a thread on dieting because i to am a bit confused. I am staying away from bad carbs as much as possible. Also i am not eating any fruit. I eat lots of meat even if they are high in cxalories like bacon. mmmm love bacon. I cant figure this out should i just stay away from processed foods and eat only meat fresh vegs and fruits? Or do i even need to diet? Should i just stay away from bread rice Pasta and potatoes like my dr said and everything else is ok to eat. protien first of course. I dont know what i am doing. So for the past week i have just been eating what i want including the rice pasta and potatoes but only a single bite of those. I love Cereal so is that ok to eat? i dont know this is alll just so hard to figure out. I just had my first fill 2 weeks ago and have little to know restriction. I can eat just about anything as long as i chew but if i forget i get stuck so does that mean i have restriction? I am also eating about 2 cups of food at a time. i eat 3 meals a day with 2 Snacks. is that normal?

it sounds like you need a fill. you should not be able to eat that much(2 cups) even with a little restriction if you dont chew you can get stuck. You should contact your DR for an appt.

i am really convinced that half of these doctors and nutritionists make crap up.

no two doctors/nuts tell patients the same thing.

you pretty much have to do the best you can on the info you are given.

it's a conpsiracy I tell ya.;)

Did anyone else notice that "nutritionists" starts with nutr!

Good for you! I could not agree more. I will never do a "diet" again. I didn't spend two years to get banded (July 25, 2012) just to go on another diet. I went on a low carb diet years ago, lost weight, sure, but ended up with gall stones, that got stuck, and was in critical condition for 10 days at Duke Hospital, and ultimately gained back every pound and then some. My husband went on Atkins also, lost over 60 Lbs. and ended up with kidney stones. Every doctor we had, basically all said "yup, low carb diet!". Never again. Listen to the doctor AND your own body. Everyone is different. The band won't work on it's own. You must make choices on what you put in your mouth and how much. Slow and safe is the key. We all didn't get Fat in a couple of months or even years. We won't lose it in short order either. Be motivated by other things that your gaining and don't obsess. Enjoy Life, it is sort, at best.

I agree. Eating bacon and other meat with NO fruit? Does that mean no vegetables either? Now that is just crazy. Get back to a nutritionist and Dr. Don't you want to be in good health for YOURSELF, let alone your family? Your, in my opinion, asking for very major health problems. Been there done that.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
