Walking after surgery?

Recommended Posts

When the drs talking about walking to relieve some of the gas pains, blood clots, etc, does anyone know how much they are suggesting? To your kitchen, around the block, etc?

Thanks!

Btw, surgery is tomorrow morning- heading to hospital at 6:30 and surgery is 8am- first patient so I'm assuming I will be home by noon. Can't wait but nervous that I'm not prepared enough. Also worried about getting enough Protein, doing the right thing, etc.

You'll need to get up and walk a little quite regularly. Listen to your body and don't overdo it too soon. A couple of minutes every hour can help.

I was told walking to the bathroom was good for the blood clot issues. I went out to day to a couple of stores, took it very slow but was hoping to help the gas and I WAY overdid it.Not only did it not help the gas, I am exhausted and feel horrible. Normally I could go hrs walking in stores but not today. (my surgery was Thurs the 13th so today is day 3 postop)

I just had my surgery on October 12th, I walked a little around the hospital, but I did not over do it. It does help especially with the gas. When you are home, just walk a bit around your home nothing to crazy. By Friday, I walked 15 minutes around my neighborhood, and I felt fine. Just listen to your body, but do try to walk a bit. Best of luck.

In the hospitall you want to try and walk every 2 hrs, it really helped a lot. when i got home, I was pretty active, I have 3 kids under 7. I walked every 2 hours, excet at night I stayed in bed to rest to sleep as long as possible. In the am I would have a bottle of Water and Vitamins and then walk around the block, by that time, the water had passed through and I could eat Breakfast (you cant drink 30 min before or after meals). Got home Wednesday night, by Friday I felt like nothing ever happened. Good luck!

I was up and walking the hopital floors a few hours after. I would try and walk every few hours if you can. I was on med but this helped gas. But I can tell you I could not have gas relief until a few days after. Good Luck

You shoudl be up and out of bed within a few hours of the surgery - I was made to walk walk walk after a major 8 hour bowel resection last year, sheesh. Its not good for you to lie about.

After lapband surgery, I was up within two hours and when I got home the next day I went out and walked a couple of miles - very slowly and gently. If you're trying to get rid of gas, if you can walk about for 20 minutes, half an hour outside, it works better than just moving about inside the house.

I just walked around my house. I didn't let anyone wait on me. I got up to get my own Water and Protein Shakes and got up to use the restroom as much as possible. I think Day 2 I walked around the block. I didn't have gas pains though.

Surgery was a huge success and only needed two insissions but the gas pains are brutal. Hope to get relief soon!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
