husband looking into lap band surgery to lose weight, seeing lots of negative factors here, not losing weight or terrible acid reflux

I am a success. I had my surgery on 9/22/10 and as of today have lost 101 lbs. It's not easy. I pb and throw up sometimes and I know why. If I don't chew small pieces of meat I will get stuck. You have to follow all of your Doctors orders from day 1. All Doctors have different instructions. Just follow what your Doctor has to say. Also, go to your support group meetings. It is good to follow this blog, but sometimes you just can't read into it so much. Good luck to your husband on his journey.

Have him go all over this site...the truth is all here and the successes are the VAST majority. I would say dont involve yourself too much in helping him decide because it will be entirely his responsibility to deal with it and work the band...

He will get any and all questions answered here and lots of support.

PS: I love my band so much I would even self-pay again if I had to!!!

I agree that there are a lot of success stories here, I am one too. I had surgery 11/29/10 and have lost a little over a hundred pounds. I have had no complications or issues, and really haven't had to work at it at all. When I first joined this site right after having surgery, I got a little scared by some of the complication stories I read on here. I even spoke with my doctor about it and he made a very good point. This is a support group website, and when people are having problems, they come on here for help, so it is common to see more complication stories than success stories. Good luck with whatever he chooses!

I would call myself a lap band success story (albeit still a work in progress!) I was banded on 13 april 2011 and have lost 42kg (95lb) and with no difficulties such as PBing, sliming or getting stuck. Yes, I am working the band and being very particular about what I eat, logging my calories with myfitnesspal.com and exercising regularly. However, I am still living a full and happy life, eating out regularly, socialising etc. I am almost always the designated driver when my husband and I go out so it is really easy to stay on the Water.

Lap banding isn't for everyone and your husband will have to work the band, but it sounds like you will be a great support for him if he does go down that path.

Good luck.

A better point is that people who have problems with their lap-bands don't WANT to come here because they feel embarrassed by their difficulties.

I disagree. If anything this site has a disproportionately high number of problems. Most people on here (with some exceptions) are relatively new or are having issues. That is because when people are having issues they look for support or solutions. On the other hand people that have been banded for a while that are not having problems don't come to sites like this because they don't need to. They are too busy living their lives.

Through all the bumps in my road, I say that I have had success with the band. Though I would like to lose 10 more lbs I am still a healthy BMI and been a stable weight for a year.

Banded on 8/4/11 and it was the greatest thing I ever did, and I was self pay. No insurance to pick up the tab. I have currently lost 40#'s, reduced by diabetes meds to less than 1/2 of what I was taking and feel much, much better. Even look forward to exercise. The band is NOT a magic bullet. For the band to work you have to be committed. It won't stop you from eating what you want, just may make it more difficult. No problem getting ice cream, milkshakes, high carb/calorie food from going down. If you're not committed, don't do it. It won't work.

The truth is that the surgery is not a silver bullet, you have to put the work in to see success. A lot of people think its an easy way out and it is not! Are there complications? Of course its surgery! But the complications from surgery are equal or less to the very real complications of being obese.

I would suggest you both go to a weight loss seminar to get more information about the process. But the same life changes that need to take place with any real change in weight are the same he will need to do with surgery if he is willing to make those changes the band will just make them easier!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
