Is your band not working or is it you?

Recommended Posts

petuniap, thanks so much! This is one of the reasons I started this topic. I knew someone would reply with the information needed as you have. The other was because so many people b*tch about the band that it doesn't work. I know it does and I know that I wasn't doing what I needed to. My biggest problem, believe it or not is that I'm seldom hungry; so I don't eat and I'm not getting in enough calories. I need to really focus on getting food in. Wrong foods don't interest me (other than those dang creamers). Yesterday I only had about 900 cals and 50 g of Protein. This is about what I usually have, since I didn't track food at the start I'm not in the habit. I simply made an effort to eat the right food at the right times and I didn't have to think about it.

I am often angered by what gets posted by those who aren't finding the success they had hoped for. My life is about taking responsibility for the things I do. I want everyone who has taken on the expense and challenge of the band to succeed. Hopefully, this will help.

I was banded May 19th with an 8cc or 8ml whatever it is and I have just had my last and final fill giving me a total of 8cc/8mls and I have only lost 15 pounds. Other than 2 weeks of little appetite after my previous 7cc total fill, I am having no restriction or any other signs that the band is working. I think this band is too big. The surgeon basically said well, it doesn't work for some people. Not the response I was looking for after spending $10,000. I think the band is too big. Of course he says that couldn't be the reason though he has offered no other reasons why it is not working.

I was just filled 2 days ago. I am still on purees. So, I am really not sure if it is working now, we'll see. The last fill I got to 7cc/7ml for about 2 weeks after, I had no appetite so I lost about 8 pounds in month. With the fill of 2 days ago, I do seem to have an appetite. But, I am not sure if intense exercise is candling out the lesser appetite. I had an extremely exhausting hour of tennis instruction yesterday morning and I was hungry the rest of the day but I only drank a few Protein puddings.

I am very discouraged and I really don't have anyone to talk to about this. There really is not Lap Band Community in South Africa. My husband went along with the surgery but he really didn't want me to get it. We don't talk about the band at all. He just acts as if I never got it. I guess he is thinking, "I told you so," since I have only lost 1/4 of the weight.

I am seriously considering going on a liquid diet like medifast. I just need to figure out how to get it here.

My back up plan is to come to the States and get a smaller band but that poses challenges living in SA with followup and fills. Not sure what to do.

Not a happy camper.

Petuniap, those are great "rules" to follow. I was banded 2 years ago and have backslid. I've gone back to working the band very similar to your post. Feels good to go back to basics.

VUCARRE,

Have you had a barium swallow? Get them to more tests! The Barium swallow will show if you band is working. They also can go in with a camera. Don't give up!

My BFF was banded 8 years ago and she is have less restriction now. You have to play around with your fills and work out. Do you exercise?

Stay positive!

Cheers,

Kristi

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
