Liquid Diet Before Lap Band Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

My doctor has given me pre-op instructions that begin the day before surgery: Clear Liquids only. After searching online, I see some people talking about a 2-3 week pre-op Liquid Protein diet. Would you mind sharing your pre-op diet and when it started? My doctor is Dr. George Woodman in Memphis. Thanks so much!

:)

mine was a 2 week "fasting diet", which consisted of a slimfast in the morning, slimfast for lunch and a lean cuisine type meal for dinner. was allowed 2 fruits with shakes and 2 Snacks of pudding or milk. the day before surgery, i was on a clear liquid diet. my surgeon says it is to shrink the liver some so easier access to the stomach. i lost 6 lbs on mine.

Mine was a 2 week "full liquid" diet, 1000 calories per day. I was allowed juices, Soups, Protein Shakes, yogurts, sugar-free Jello and puddings, that sort of thing. And then for the last 48 hours before surgery, we had to switch to clear liquid only - we were allowed anything you could see through, so it was mostly juice (apple, cranberry, grape, that sort of stuff, nothing like orange), broth (chicken, beef or vegetable), and only clear Protein Drinks (I got some from Isopure, at my local GNC). The point was to shrink the liver, to make the surgery go better. My surgeon said I did great, that my liver looked really good and that surgery was a breeze (mine was last Thursday).

Mine was "try to stay away from the carbs" for 2 weeks and nothing to eat or drink after midnight. I had to stay under a certain BMI for surgery and I was nervous about being over it so I put myself on liquids for three days prior to surgery... But my doctor didn't require it.

Mine is a four week diet, currently on the 3rd week, which consists of broth, 16oz of juice, 2 Protein drinks, 3 servings of dairy (one serving of Greek yogurt), at least 64 ounces of Water, 2 no sugar added Fudgesicles, sugar free Popsicles, and diet juices or drinks. It's pretty hard, but I've already lost 20lbs. My surgery is scheduled for September 14th.

Mine was the same as Screeden's. Two shakes and a tiny little dinner. I go in next Monday. I'll be glad to get it over.

I have two weeks of 3 Protein drinks a day and unlimited sugar-free Jello. I am on day five and I am soooo hungry. I have gone through every flavor of jello and I have realized that that all pretty much taste the same after a while. It's hard, but I just keep telling myself that it will be worth it.

My pre op diet....protein drinks for Breakfast and lunch...any Soup for dinner. Any sugar free Jello, jello pudding. V8, cottage cheese (gross) or fat free yogurt. This is day 3. Surgery is Sept 23. Miss pepsi the most. Dr says NO carbonation again,,,,ever. Am a pepsiaholica. Found carmel calicum chews...yummy. So nervous,,,you can find so much positive about having surgery and just as much negative. I read they have stopped doing lab band in other countrys. Have read some Drs here have stopped doing them too. But then read about the sucess rate and just leaves me confussed.

Am on the last day of my preop diet which is 4 Protein Shakes a day, a small meal of Protein and all the low carb veggies I want. Can also have the sugar free popcicles and Jello. I have lost 10 pounds as of this morning on the preop diet and tomorrow is clear liquids only with surgery on Wed! I can hardly wait. Going to go get a pedicure today just to have pretty feet for surgery and get my mind on something else. I cannot stop thinking about it. lol

I start my 2 week pre op diet on Wednesday. 200ml fruit juice, small Porridge, 1pt semi skimmed milk, 400ml Soup, 150g low fat yogurt, 150g custard, plus as much tea, coffee, sugar free diluting juice and sugar free jelly (jello). That takes me right up to the operation. No protien shakes or anything like that. Surgery in UK so maybe a bit different.

I am scheduled for my surgery on the 20th of Sept. Currently I am on 2 Protein drinks a day, a 200 calorie breakfast (one egg one starch and a small carb) and for lunch lean meat and a few veggies (green of course)..... I estimate I am living on 500 cal a day? (My drinks are "lite" 100 cal each)////// This is SUPER hard!

I want a soda sooo bad right now. But they are a no no from my dr both pre op and post op so oh well. One day we will just not miss our soda anymore. At least I hope so.

Wow, I was surprised to hear about all the liquid pre-op diets out there. My doctor put me on an all Protein diet. Meaning eat all the meat I wanted and Protein Shakes and nothing else. Of I forgot, he told me I could eat eggs too. So I would eat eggs for breakfast, and meat and protein shakes all day long. I was only on this about 9 days before surgery. I did not have to go on a all day liquid diet the day before the surgery. I know the diet is to help your liver shrink and be ready for the surgery. I had the surgery done on September 1st and am currently eating only pureed foods. Starting tomorrow I get to start ground meats like finely cooked and chopped beefs and poultry with soft fruits and wholy cooked vegetables as well. I am highly looking forward to some of those foods tomorrow. The pureed foods is for the birds and I had to go OFF the protein shakes the first week after surgery because they were causing way too much gas! It was horrible. Walk, wak, walk after surgery and make sure you sleep as much as possible to gain your strength back. I still feel very tired all day long and it's been almost 2 weeks since the surgey was performed!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
