Is an EDG the same as an upper GI??

I have pre-op in a couple of weeks and was woundering what the differance between an

EDG and an upper GI. I'm a bit nervous about the whole thing. Any thoughts?? Rebecca

EGD uses an endoscope to explore the esophagus, stomach, and upper intestine. UGI is done under fluroscopy and uses barium contrast which is drunk during the procedure. Good luck

Yup. An Endo they put you to sleep and stick a camera down your throat. An upper GI they make you drink this horrible liquid and take x-rays to watch it move through your system. They both monitor the same organs and regions of the body but they are just viewed differently.

I thought that the barium would taste nasty, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. Not soothing I'd drink daily, but it didn't make me want to vomit...LOL
