GAINED 15.5 pounds of fluid!?!?

Recommended Posts

So, I'm less than 48 hours post-op and came home today to find I had gained 15.5 pounds. They say it's just Fluid but I'm freaking out. I look horrible! My face is swollen, my hands are swollen and now I'm so afraid to drink anything else. Did anyone else experience this?

It is sometimes called third spacing or surgical hoarding and you will start voiding it out within 72 hours. Do not limit your Fluid intake, one has nothing to do with the other.

Don't be afraid it happens to almost everyone with all kinds of surgery,

Mimi

You poor thing! You must feel so bloated! But drink MORE liquids to get the flow going! You should lose it in no time. And stay close to the bathroom! Good luck to you. You are at the beginning of an amazing journey!

Hey, you're an oldie moldie too! You look great! Super congrats on losing beyond your goal, and keeping it off! You're a great inspiration for me! I got the band so I would never go up and down again, and you are living proof it works-- even for us SEMI seniors! Thanks!

Hi There, I had surgery on Monday and couldn't help but step on the scale yesterday...That was a bad mistake...I had gained 2 pounds. I know only 2 and not 15.5, but I was still mad. I hadn't eaten basically a single thing since Sunday night...in my mind I should have lost a couple pounds...forgetting of course that I just had surgery, but body is in shock, full of extra fluids. I reminded myself that I actually wasn't taking in all the Protein and Water I should been. So I made some changes to my liquids yesterday and today I lost those 2 pounds plus 3 more. I also will really try to only weigh myself once a week. Cause it really does play a nasty game with your brain. Just keep doing what the Dr's tell you to do, follow the liquid diet and those pounds will come off. Just remember they are pounds from liquid, not calories and will come off quickly. I also think walking is the key with helping the body get rid of the bloating and gas. Hope your doing well soon.

Its horrible isnt it? But it IS entirely possible, I mean be logical, you've just had surgery, you've been barely fed, its impossible that it's anything else BUT Fluid.

I know both times i've had surgery int he past year, they've pushed the fluids so ridiculously I've gotten to the point where my face as unrecognizeable, and I couldnt even see my knuckles, or the tendons in my hands and feet, let alone my ankle bones, and I've gotten skinny enough that I've got those old lady claw hands normally, lol.

I actually get really irritable about it, I mean its darn ridiculous. You just dont need anything like the amount of Fluid they fill you with. Its bad enough after lapband surgery and its only overnight, I was connected to that stupid IV for five days for my bowel resection! I couldnt even bend at the elbows and knees.

1 L of Water weighs 2.5 lbs

No surgeon would ever give you six liters of Fluid during surgery (it would kill you).

It's likely they gave you 1 L of Fluid (2.5 lbs) and your body did the rest.

It could also be that your scale at home is different than your scale at the Dr.

That medications you're on are causing fluid retention.

etc.

There are several reasons why your weight can go up that much. It's also not uncommon for men to gain 15-25 lbs when they have a major cheat day after they've been on a diet. They eat more salt and their body just pulls in all of that fluid and keeps it there.

Drink lots of fluids, have some tea, and you'll be fine. However - if you have ANY chest pain, get to the ER immediately.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
