Hello Everyone,

I just found out that I may have a low functioning thyroid (which I'm sure you all know causes weight gain, depression, fatigue and other issues) and now I'm wondering if I should be going through with this surgery or trying to treat the thyroid issue first. Of course the surgery is scheduled for Monday, this is the first time I have considered cancelling and now I don't know what to do. I am going to see my nurse practitioner tomorrow. But I'm kinda freaking out!

My question is does anyone else have hypothyroidism that is being treated but still having or have had surgery???

Thanks :)

I do and going on the meds hasn't done a darn thing to help with weight loss.

I am hypothyroid and have been on medicine for about 10 years. The meds did not help me lose any weight but does keep my thyroid #'s in the normal range. Since I have been enrolled in the bariatric program, I have lost weight by replacing some meals with Protein shakes and watching what I eat. I still plan to have the lapband surgery, hopefully before the year is done.

I have had Hypothyroidism for 10 years and have also not lost any weight. All the medicine does for me is help my numbers stay where they should be. Goodluck!!!!!

Thanks everyone. I thought about this some more last night and I'm going to proceed with surgery.

After thinking about it, I'm sure those that thyroid medicaiton did help are probably not on this board anyway.

I also realize that having hypothyroidism did not cause my food addiction, I did, and the addiction is what I want to over come. With the support from the band and the clinic I'm going through I feel as though I will be able to achieve this.

If they give me medicaiton to help with my thyroid then great. I might have more energy, not be so tired all the time and my body might be able to stay in harmony a little better...all of which will give me an extra boost with my existing weight loss efforts.

I have had hypothyroidism for 23 years. At first when they put me on the medication I lost about 10 pounds but, I have gained that back and many more. They are always adjusting my medication up and down, drives me crazy! Some people think that the medication is like amphetamines and it gives you all kinds of energy and makes you not hungry. It isn't like that at all. No matter what they put me on, I am always tired and hungry. Even though at this point I have been denied by my insurance (BMI too low at 34.9) I am going to have the surgery. I will probably have to self pay. Hope my little rant here helps with your decision.

Thanks. It does help. I am self pay as well because in Canada they only cover Gastric By-Pass....and that is too crazy for me.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
