so THAT'S what being stuck feels like...

Recommended Posts

I am three months out and today I had my first stuck episode. I took too big of a bite of tilapia and boy, did I pay for it! The feeling is beyond anything I have ever experienced. It hurts, it stings, its uncomfortable...takes my breath away! I ran to the fridge and sipped on one Water. It slowly went down but it hurt like a mother...

Long story short, I managed to survive. I always wondered what it felt like being stuck and I am no longer curious.

Thanks for listening !

I remember the first time I got stuck... Oh man, did I ever think I was going to die! I think I was almost 5 months post op the first time, such a horrible horrible and scary feeling.

It's the worst feeling ever! Just be glad it didn't happen in public. A few tipes to avoid being stuck:

1. Chew, chew, chew

2. Don't stand around the kitchen pooppingthings into your mouth, you're more apt to swallow a bigger piece of something then get stuck

3. Avoid dry textured meats. Make sure your meats and moist.

4. When at a resturant avoid the bread basket. This happened to me and it ruined my entire dinner. I ran to the bathroom 5 times and vomited twice-why risk it?

Any of you out in the Bandland who have never been stuck-count your blessings because it is the worst pain ever!

I have been stuck a few times, but am starting to learn what if feels like right before getting stuck. It has helped me to stop eating until the food passes and then trying again with a small bite and eating slowly so that I don't get stuck. After my fourth fill yesterday I got stuck this morning on a Calcium capsule and had to wait for it to dissolve before I could drink my Protein Drink. I'm going to move taking these capsules to the evening when I'm not as tight. This knowing how to avoid the horrible stuck feeling is all a part of making the band work for us. Good luck and say no to being stuck.

I learned the hard way too. I noticed that when I'm hungry I take bigger bites with less chewing.... BOY... did I ever learn not to RUSH when hungry. Stuck is NOT fun....unfortunately, it's taken me about 3 or 4 stuck episodes to figure that out.

Unfortunately, the hard way is the only way to learn!

Once I discovered this exact thing about myself, I started a habit of pausing before my first bite to remind myself I am banded and that I need to eat slowly, take small bites, and chew, chew, chew!!! It really helped me to stop that first bite symdrome!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
