Can bandsters still throw up when sick ?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I was just curious what happens when a bandster gets and upset stomach and has to possibly vomit?

I ate some Mexican food that began to fight back about 2 hours after I ate. I felt miserable. (I had a previous issue with authentic Mexican food prior to being banded, so I should have know better...) I felt the need to throw up to relieve my discomfort but was afraid to try for fear of really messing things up or stressing my banded tummy.

Can we throw up like we did before, or does the band stop that from happening?

We can throw up, but I personally do everything I can to avoid it. I keep a supply of Phenerghen suppositories on hand (an anti-nausea medication that your doctor can supply). I've had the flu once since getting banded, and they were a life saver.

I threw up once. I had taken some liquid pain med for some reason and an hour later...ewww...then ahhh...it came up just like it went down. Kind of surprised me how much it felt like a "normal" vomit (not like a PB) but I was sure glad it was liquid. This was at about 2+ months banded.

Vomiting should be avoided, but it can be done.

I had a stomach virus since banding and it was awful - I just kept dry heaving because I did not have alot of food in my system from the day before. It was terrible

Yep! I threw up once when I had the flu and I swear - I almost turned myself inside out! It was TERRIBLE! Painful and it was definitely different than the standard PB.

I often wondered the same thing until it happened recently. ICK!

I had a case of food poisoning eight months after the band was placed. Lots of vomiting. A month later, my slip was diagnosed. I don't think it's a coincidence. Avoid it as much as you can...if you do, try -- if it's possible -- not to "heave" the contents from the lower stomach. Vomiting what's in the pouch shouldn't be a problem because it's more like a PB.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
