Less Restriction and Weight Loss After First Fill?

Recommended Posts

I was banded about 7 weeks ago. My surgeon primes the band with 2 cc at surgery. Things were going really well. I was feeling lots of restriction, and the weight was coming off, until I got my first fill of an additional 2 cc last Weds. Since then, I've felt little restriction, have been very hungry, and my weight loss has stopped. What the heck is up with that?

That sure is odd. I, too, had 2 ml during surgery (6/3) and received my first fill of 2.5ml this past wednesday. I feel a whole lot of restriction now... a lot more than I had before.

Relatively, do you feel LESS restriction after the fill? Are you still on mushies or have you progressed to solids?

Did your doctor do your fill under fluoroscopy or blind?

I actually feel LESS restriction after the fill. Technically I can progress to solids, but have been a little reluctant. Just tried a little salad tonight and that didn't feel too good. I am feeling more restriction today than I was yesterday, so maybe I was just having a weird day?

The guy who does it at my Dr.'s office is a Nurse Practitioner, and he did it by feel. There was a surgical resident in there who tried first and couldn't get the port. (That was fun.) But I definitely felt when the NP hit the port, and he pulled out all the liquid that was in there--2 ccs-- to confirm, then put in 4 in its place. Feeling a bit more restriction today, but not significantly more than I was with just 2 cc. Weird.

It's good that they verified they were in. It's not uncommon for blind fills to result in punctured tubing, which leads to a leak and tubing replacement (not fun).

It could just be that your fill is taking its time. Mine take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to reach their full effect.

Give it time. And be careful, while you may feel that you can eat more you may be very surprised quite suddenly by a food you thought you could eat that you really couldn't. For me it was rice oddly enough. Figured it would be safe - nope. Stuck. And remember, on stormy bad weather days your band will be a little looser. On clear days it will be tighter. So if you've had a few stormy days where you are that will account for part of the delay.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
