banded yesterday with hiatal hernia repair...ouch

Recommended Posts

surgery went well actually went in an hour earlier than expected which was good so I wasn't just sitting there second guessing myself. Recovery for a couple hours then up to the floor little disappointed in that so I asked for a room change or a discharge. My doctor agreed to discharge so surgery was at noon and I was discharged by 5 home by 6 medicated and sleeping.

Slept ok last night today I am pretty sore the doctor said the hiatal hernia repair was fairly big so maybe this is part of it. I am taking the hydrocodone as ordered and up walking often but in more pain than I expected. Also taking gas ex chewables and tried a heating pad. Any other ideas out there?

I had the exact same surgery as you...it was pretty rough. I think if I had only lapband recovery would have been much easier. I took my pain medicine around the clock for the first 3-4 days, and walked a lot as soon as I got home just up and down the hall way and then made my way outside as I was able. Take it easy and accept help from others each day will get a little easier! If you have any more questions feel free to ask!

Hi,

Hope you are feeling a better everyday. I had the same surgery as you back in Jan 2011 and the gas pains were the worse. I found some relief with the gas x gel strips but not completely. Just know that the gas pains will go away eventually. Walking does help as does taking deep breaths. Good luck in your journey, it's totally worth it! :)

You will feel much better in the next few days. I too had a hernia repaired and the first 3-4 days were tough. Unless you do some type physical work you should be OK Tuesday.

I had surgery on Wednesday morning and returned on the following Monday. The first two days back at work were a little tiring, but after that things were good.

Keep getting in your walking as much as possible even if you only walk very short distances. Takes your pain pills, but stop as soon as you can manage without them.

Good luck!!! You can do this!!

I was banded on 6/17. I too had a Hiatal Hernia repair the same time. I hernia repair was definitely more painful than the band itself. Just get plenty of rest. I had really bad Constipation from the Hydrocodone, so be CAREFUL! Only take it when absolutely necessary. Good Luck!

I had the exact same surgery on 6/23. I am forcing myself back to work on tomorrow. The gas pains have gotten better. I find that drinking lots of Water and walking does help. I havent been able to stomach much of the Protein shakes so I have been taking it slow. I eat what i can tolerate which is pretty much still Clear liquids with the addition of thin grits. I'm still tired during the day so my advice is listen to your body and take it SLOW!!! for the record, I started this journey weighing 273. I weighed myself and I weighed in at 252.

Hi I had my surgery 6/29 with a hiatal hernia repair also. I was really hurting too. I am slowly starting to feel better. Very gasy. Also on hydrocodone - taking it less now than at first. Finally starting to be able to sleep. I am hoping to start on my Protein Shakes today from the Clear Liquids. Not very hungry though. Been forcing down the Water. My stomach is still a bit blated and very tender. My throat is finally not sore. I flet like I was run over by a mack truck the second day. I know it gets better pretty fast but it has been more painful than I had anticipated. It is from the hernia repair. Hang in there, you are not alone. Everyday seems better.

I had a small (1-2cm) hernia repaired and it isn't the end of the world. I take my pain meds and make sure I'm hydrated, and I know it will get better. Spend less time worrying about the surgery itself, and focus your energy of getting things ready that will make your recovery more comfortable. The best you can do is have stuff ready (heating pad, etc) and just know that it will get better. It isn't fun, but I'm not crying and miserable, and I'm a HUGE pain wuss.

Amy

Banded on 6/29 Doc found HH during surgery and repaired it... It is painful but any band surgery can end up with a HH repair so it's nothing to worry about because it's not in our control. The pain I feel is much worse with the HH repair though. It's two surgeries instead of one.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
