Need HELP with low carb diet

Recommended Posts

I go to my pre op appointment and to get my surgery date on July 20th. YAY! I have to lose weight and am having a hard time getting motivated to do that. I have good intentions and always have a good Breakfast and lunch but after work it all goes out the window. Anyways, My biggest problem and favorite food is bread and pasta.. I want to start a low carb diet such as the Atkins diet. I was also told by my dr to start drinking the Protein Drinks. If I'm doing the low carb diet, can I still have the Protein Shakes? Please help! And thank you all in advance. Im hoping to lose 20 pounds before my dr appointment so I really need to get to moving.

I would say that you can have Protein Drinks. It just won't fill you up for too long because it's a liquid rather than a solid food. At least that's what worked for me. When I was in pre-op I would drink 2 Protein Shakes and one meal. I lost 22 lbs like that and I stuck to a low carb diet which made me feel better. Once you get over the cravings you should be fine. Find yourself a good and tasty Protein shake. My favorite is Muscle Milk Lite chocolate. It's kind of high in carbs about 9 g but it's so tasty and the only thing I could look forward to when I was hungry. Good luck to you.

My doctor and nutritionist has me on low carn/high Protein. I drink a Protein Shake for Breakfast, one for lunch and then a lean, high protein dinner with at least one cup of veggies for dinner.... Minimum butter and salt. Last night I fix have about 1/4th of a cup of whole grain rice with my dinner... But honestly, when I take a bite of something super carby I just ask myself "is it worth it?" and most of the time it isn't. I've been doing this a little over a week and honestly, the cravings are mostly done with. The first three days are the hardest. If you can get through those with no cabs you'll do great! I've lost 9 lbs in a week... You can do it!!

Yes, you can have Protein Shakes on a low carb diet. You just need to pay attention to the carbs in them. Slim Fast has a protein shake with 25gm of carbs but they also make one with 3gm. When I'm home, I use EAS powder mixed with unsweetened almond milk for a total of 5 carbs.

The only 'trick' to following a low carb diet is to understand that it is the carbs that cause the cravings. Even one bite of bread or potato or rice will start me on that craving path again. Protein and green vegies are all I eat now.

I laughed at this comment because I hate when my phone "fixes" my words for me.....one day something smelled like "ribs" instead of smelled like "him" - - - -

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
