Is this normal after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery last wednesday 6/8/11, no problems noted during surgery and I was home that afernoon. I was finally allowed to shower on friday and as soon as I opened the curtain afer the shower I was hit with a wave of sweating & a hot flash. I got myself out of the tub and leaned on the counter because I started getting that "fading" feeling, like I was about to pass out. Walked myself over to the couch where I layed down for a few minutes, but as soon as I got back up and went into the bathroom it happened again. I got my boyfriend up and as he was holding me up I was almost passing out in his arms. Layed down again and everythng was fine. Had no other issues over the weekend until this morning after the shower again. I got the hot & sweaty feeling again and immediately layed down ( which I think helped the fainting from happening again).

I'm geting enough fluids, had 2 liters of Water yesterday plus 3 11 oz protien shakes. However I did not have anything before the shower this AM.

I also still have a stabbing pain in my left shoulder since surgery (which im assuming is from the air they pump you with) but im wondering if it usually lasts this long?

Lastly, I have not been able to sleep on my sides since surgery. I find that I "feel" everything moving around in my abdomin, and Im only comfortable sleeping semi-upright on the couch. Is this pretty normal as well?

I appreciate any input on these situations!! Thanks

The shoulder pain and sleeping issues are normal. I don't think the wooziness/passing out is normal. I'd call your doctor and see what they say.

Thanks! I did call friday right after the icident and the nurse practicioner thought it might be a little hypoglycemia and told me to have a 1/2 teaspoon of applesauce. I also called this morning when I got to work and she thought it might be the same thing but they are having me come in friday for a check & blood work to check my sugars.

I have gotten light-headed on and off since my surgery 3 weeks ago. Turns out, my blood pressure has taken a nose dive! According to my nurse practioner, that is not all that abnormal, as I have lost sort of a lot of weight in a short time, and my diet changed drastically, from carbs, etc etc (!), to practically straight protein! She said the combo of those two factors sometimes affects new banders that fast! So cool!

So I am going to my primary doctor on Friday too, to talk about getting off of some of my blood pressure meds!

Hope yours is as easy of a fix! Good luck to you!

p.s. I had the shoulder pain for about 3 or 4 days. Hot pad and vicidin kept it in check!

I had my surgery on the 8th as well. And then that Friday I decided I just HAD to go to my 5 year anniversary luncheon at work. Well I think I overdid it because I was standing there talking to my coworkers and had that same feeling. I sat down and they all knew something was up. I work at a hospital and they grabbed a stretcher and made me lay down with my feet up. I felt like an idiot after the fact but didn't care then. I think mine was blood pressure as it had been running lower than MY normal since surgery, plus I wasnt drinking enough at that point. So I say all this to say that I feel your pain, but mine hasnt happened again since. Hope they figure it out and everything works out for you!

I have had dizziness and weakness after a bath when I use hot Water . It doesn't hit me until I get out. I have to go back to bed and rest before I can get dressed when this happens. I have always taken extremely hot baths or showers. Since surgery I have had to keep the temp a little cooler. You might try that if you take a very hot shower.

I had the exact same problem following surgery. At my week post op visit my surgeon said it was hypoglycemia and suggested that I have a Protein Shake before bed to sustain my blood sugar overnight and that worked great for me.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
