Liver Shrinkage/ Pre Op Diet

Recommended Posts

So im not to clear on this pre op diet. Ive read different things on here. I guess i have some questions

Is the pre op diet required before all surgery?

Is the point to shrink the liver or jump start weight loss, and why is liver shrinkage nesscary before surgery?

They want to shrink the liver to have more room to move around. I had a co-worker who did NOT follow her diet for her gastric and the liver was huge. The surgeon had to have a nurse hold back the liver while the procedure was done. It's for their safety and yours, they don't want to nic your liver.

For me, my surgeon had me do a high Protein diet and lose 20 lbs. Because of that, I am continuing this until surgery and will not have a liquid diet. Other surgeons require the liquid diet to shrink the liver that way, rapidly without the high protein diet which can take longer. Different surgeons mean different requirements.

The material I was given from the doctor's office said the pre-p diet was to help shrink the liver. If you were under a BMI of 40 you only needed to do the diet 1 week prior to surgery and the higher your BMI the longer you needed to be on it.

I was really grateful to be on the 1 week liquid diet...don't get me wrong it was difficuly but it really prepared me for the post-op diet. It also let me know that Protein does fill me up.

The entire day of the surgery I had nothing to drink or eat-mythroat was really so sore I had trouble talking loudly. But the next day I could have Jello, Soup, tea....but I couldn't handle much,

I highly recommend watching a real surgery on YouTube. Not gross at all because the way the surgery is done the is no blood. You see how they flip the liver out of the way; which when it is fatty is a lot more difficult. I was not on a 2 week liquid diet because I hade already lost 50 pounds on an extended presurgery diet. Start a diet now. The more you lose now the lower your eventual goal weight.

Hello Everyone,

I am new here. I am having surgery on Thursday (this week). I got my insurance approval last Monday and they asked me to start an all liquid diet on Tuesday.

I have followed it mostly but I admit I've cheated here and there with some toast. I know it was wrong but I was sooo hungry. Is this going to be a huge problem? My BMI is less than 40.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
