Yep. I am. I take my Methimazole regularily now, so my levels will be in the normal range before surgery(I won't get the okay from my PC doc if they're not..) I was just wondering if anyone else is HYPERthyroid and planning on getting the lap band..

YES! So don't worry, if you want the surgery, it can still happen. My surgery was canceled from it's original date because my hyperthyrodism went haywire. I think they are most concerned because our blood pressure and resting heart rate tend to be high and they have a harder time keeping it under control while we're under.

My hyperthyrodism didn't have to be under control before the surgery, but the negative effects (my resting heart rate was always around 105) had to be under 90 before they would give me the okay.

I was actually diagnosed because of the preop labs etc that are required and have been on 15mg of Methimazole once a day now for 2 months and didn't realize how crappy I felt and didn't even realize it. It's amazing what we contribute to being over weight.

Now I have been banded since 5/26 and doing great! Good luck to you!

I too suffer from Hypothyroid and Graves disease. I had iodine radiation at the age of 16. I was hyperthyroid, heart palpations, rapid weightloss, bad mood swings, couldn't concentrate in school, developing a goiter and having thyroid storm episodes... my parents decoded we'd do the iodine treatment. Fast forward to present time, married with 4 children. I've had successful weightloss journeys in the past, 75lbs-80lbs with my first 3 children... however after my 4th in 2014, my body hasn't bounced back like before. My doctor believes my time has come, and my thyroid is dead. Now I am solely depended on synthroid... morbidly obese and seeking the gastric sleeve.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
