Bertha / Abkin in Morristown NJ

Recommended Posts

I'd love to hear from and maybe get together with anyone who's a patient of either of these doctors. Dr. Nicholas Bertha was involved in the FDA trials so he's been doing banding for a relatively long time. But I've only found a couple of other patients of theirs--there MUST be more! Where are all the Jersey people?

Jersey person here, but not a patient of Drs. Abkin or Bertha! I have heard that they are wonderful though. I'm from south Jersey and at the time I started looking into banding, no doctors near me were performing the surgery (Dr. Borao in Monmouth County is doing it now), so it was easier for me to get to NYC than it was for me to get to Morristown.

Are you close enough to their office to pop into one of their support groups? You should be able to find some local bandsters that way!

I'll know more about their support groups after my pre-surgery appointment next week. But when I attended their WLS seminar last year, it was clear that the VAST majority of the people seeking surgery were there for the RNY. (The hospital runs a huge obesity clinic with several doctors attached. Only Bertha and Abkin do the band, so far.)

I must admit I was shocked at the number of people at this seminar. There must have been more than 300. I wonder what that group looks like now, a year later, and whether the more recent seminars have more people seeking the band?

Hi .... I'm from Jersey too.... I work in Morristown but live in Wayne and I am seeking a doctor with Lap-band experience. Alexandra I would love to know more about your doctor. My other concern is insurance. I'm currently under Blue Cross Blue Shield hmo which from what I've noticed isn't good.

Thanks!

Karen

Hi Jersey girl!

I have good news for you. I know for a fact that Horizon BCBS does cover the band for people who qualify. It's not an automatic denial like it is with Aetna and Amerihealth.

Drs. Nicholas Bertha and Alexander Abkin have done lots of lapbands, and Bertha was involved in the FDA trials way back when. I don't know offhand if they participate in Horizon's HMO network, but it would be easy enough to find out.

Hello,

I am new to the forum, and am researching the lap band. I have been looking for doctors and Dr. Abkin has come up. I noticed that you were a patient of his and would just like some input.

Thanks!!

Hi Sonia, I am a new patient of Dr. Abkin/Dr. Bertha. Actually Dr. Goldstein did my surgery on Monday 11/29. Have you been banded already?

Hi Sonia,

Nice to meet you! Feel free to fire away with your questions. Dr. Abkin's practice has several banding doctors there, and though he was my surgeon I've seen Dr. Bertha on many more occasions. Dr. Goldstein, too, more than once. It's really a group operation.

Have you been to their orientation session? That's the first step if you're considering their practice.

Newbandster, how are you feeling? That was pretty recent, are you back to yourself yet?

Hi,

No, I haven't been banded yet. I am currently in the research phase. I was researching doctors and trying to find a good one that is also on my insurance, and Dr. Abkin's name came up. How are you feeling?

Hi Alexandra,

How do I find out about the meetings? I definitely would like to go to one. And I only have about a million questions to ask you, but I promise I will pace myself. LOL

I do have one question now that I found Dr. Abkin's website. I was reading about insurance approval, and it specifically mentions providing proof of being in a program. I was in WW a few years ago, and Jenny Craig twice many years before then. But I don't have any of the paperwork. Does that mean I ahven't got a chance for approval? Also, it mentions starting a supervised diet NOW before the surgery. Now if I do that, and I lose weight (which I always do, I jsut have a problem with keeping it off) then won't they deny me? Maybe I have been getting myself psyched about this for no reason. I may have to go on diets for the enxt twp years, and then somehow prove to the insurance companies that they really don't work? How do the insurance companies decide? Sorry if I am going on and on, but as I know you can relate to, now that I have perhaps found the one tool that I think can work for me, I am thinking that I may have to starve myself for the next 2 years to prove to the insurance companies that I deserve this. Oh well.

Thanks for your response, and sorry for the long post.

Sonia

Unfortunately I'm a little pressed for time at the moment, but I can tell you this much. The information the doctors have on the site is general info for all insurance. Each carrier is different and has different requirements for proving the medical necessity of surgery. A history of attempts at weight loss is usually required, but in my case that was a written history without any actual "proof." So whatever your carrier says is what goes, for them.

Have you seen a primary-care doctor yet, and been actually diagnosed with severe (or "morbid") obesity? That's pretty much a must, and if you go now for a physical (which will DEFINITELY be required no matter what) tell your doc that you want to start immediately on a supervised diet plan. The doctor will probably hand you a printed diet and say call us in a month.

Most carriers require some type of doctor-supervised weight loss attempt in the last two years, but it might only have to be six months long. So get started NOW and before you know it the time will have passed. Start by calling your primary care doctor and getting that physical, your diagnosis, and your diet plan.

Thanks, Alexandra. I appreciate your response. I gotta tell you, I relate to you since you started at about what I am now. I am 5'11" and about 350, so when I see your numbers I feel hope.

...when I see your numbers I feel hope.

Wow, that really moves me! I remember saying the exact same thing to bandsters when I was investigating banding, too. :D I can't believe someone is saying to to me!!

It takes patience and perseverance. Happily, those are the qualities that make for successful bandsters, so *getting* the band is good practice for *having* a band!!

BTW, I forgot to mention about the meetings. Abkin/Bertha have a monthly BANDSTERS-ONLY support group that meets on the last Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. There won't be one in December, I'm sorry to say, but we understand.

Hope to see you in January!!

Alex, Please keep me posted on that January meeting. I am a patient of Abkin and Bertha but I live all the way in South Jersey. I do work in North Jersey though so maybe it will be a night that I can come. I'm not quite back to myself yet. I'm still extremely sore in my stomach area where the stiches are on the left side. I'm assuming that is where the port is. I still can't bend down to tye my shoes yet. I think the toughest part of this is keeping my stomach from growling so much. It keeps me up at night and I still can't sleep comfortable as it is because of the soreness. I actually tried a little bit of pudding today and it wasn't bad. In some of the books that I received on the post op diet before the surgery. They said that you can have pudding in Phase II of the diet. I don't know. I just try to keep the edge off and it's extremely tough. Any suggestions? I can't wait unitl next week when I can go to mushies. I think I will be so much more satisfied. I find this support group so very helpful.

Sonia,

What insurance do you have? Any weight loss attempts should be listed on your application. Not only ww or Jenny Craig. Have you ever taken diet pills to lose weight? I did and I named every one I ever took. How about the gym? That's an attempt too. Slim Fast anyone? Dexatrim? any of those over the counter medications for weight loss. Put your thinking cap on and as you think of them write them down. Any assistance, I can provide please don't hesitate to contact me as it is ALL still very fresh in my head.

Sorry for the long thread. I guess I got a little carried away!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
