Hi everyone!

My name is Jen and I am currently living in Ottawa, ON. I am 24 years old and weigh in around 270lbs. I have pretty much decided that the lap band is the way to go for me, but I still have some questions floating around in my head. Here are two that are on my mind today:

1. Do you ever get the sensation that you can feel your band? Not the restrictive effect, but like there's actually something inside you that if you move a weird way you can feel it?

2. I am concerned that I will never feel normal again. I will always have to eat with focus and explain to people why I can only eat a small portion.

I am trying to arrange my finances before going ahead a booking my date. I will be self-paying because I live in Ontario.

Thanks for any insight!

Jen

I just had my surgery April 21, and besides being sore where the port is attached to a muscle, I can't feel the band at all. Soon the pain will go away and a friend that I work with that had the band applied a year & a half ago, said she can't feel anything. When I lay on my stomach I can feel the port, but I guess it's only because it's still somewhat sore. Not bad though. Things are going well. I've lost 18 lbs so far and go for my first fill on May 31, looking forward to that. I pray that you can find the finances to do this. I am so happy to be off all the meds that I was on before and feel SO much better than I did before surgery.

Take Care,

Kim

Hey Jen!

Dont worry about the band. You won't be able to feel it really.

The band gives you a better life not takes it away. I am so used to my eating habits and have good restriction sometimes I forget I even have the band ( then I get stuck and remember oh yea!). It doesnt control my life. I know what foods work and dont and my diet is simply changed to accommodate that.

I have kept my band a secret from my friends. At first I avoided meals with them until I was able to eat normally. Now we go out and I am able to get foods that I either share ( luckily in Korea everyone is about sharing so it is easy to get awa with not eating a lot) or take left overs home. At first they questioned why I ate differently but when I just said I was on a diet and then started to lose weight they stopped asking. Now they are just used to my eating habits.

Thanks for the input, I like to hear answers from people who actually live with the band. These forums are so full of supportive people. I really feel like I'm making the right decision.

-als33- It would be awesome to stay in touch! Even if I booked tomorrow, I don't think my surgery would be until July/August so you can give me lots of tips!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
