First Fill TOMORROW!!! What should I expect??

Recommended Posts

Fills are relatively easy. Your doctor (or nurse in some cases) will feel for the port and inject a local anestetic. He/she will than acess the port with a fairly long needle, but I never felt a thing. It's all over before you know it. Just so you know, the first fill very well may not give you restriction. It took me 3 fills to feel any restriction. Good luck!

I don't know how different doctors do it, but I wasn't prepared for my first fill. I thought it would happen laying down -- I laid down, he gave the local anesthetic shot then put the big needle into the port. Then he asked me if I was ready to stand up. Ready to what?!? Umm ... incase you forgot, there's a huge needle sticking out of me! He wanted me to stand up to go over to the xray machine so he could watch the barium that I swallowed go down. One drink to see current restriction, put in the Fluid for the fill, then drink again to see if it was adjusted the right amount. Then laid back down to take the needle out. Again, not sure if that's just my doctor or others. But wish I would have known that going in!! Good luck!!

I'm a tad bit nervous... just because it's something I've never experienced before. I hate the stupid barium drink it always makes me gag. I hope this process is simple and fast. Thanks for letting me know I won't get restriction on the first go round, that's what I was actually hoping for. But now I know. Hopefully I will feel something though. Thanks for the feed back guys!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
