Pre-Op Diet Protein Shake Suggestions??

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I start my pre-op diet on May 13th (surgery on the 27th...woohoo!). I've been told I need to find a shake that offers 25g of Protein and less than 8g of sugar and have a list of shakes that fit the bill from the RD at the hospital, but I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of any they really liked?

I was thinking about ordering from bariatricadvantage.com which seems like an easy one-stop-shop for shakes and Vitamins, but it also seems a bit pricey and I'm afraid I'll order 2wks worth of shakes and hate the taste.

Anyway, I'd love to hear any feedback from others who have already done their pre-op diet.

I've tried several different samples from a few different companies....so far not one that I'm willing to live off of for a long period of time, but it's good that I'm not committed to one just yet....still trying them out but here's what I've bought.........

from Syntrax brand, the nectar samples....I think I got 10 samples of single-serve packets. Tried a few so far and they're ok. Some you can mix with milk and some with Water.

from the Incredible chocolate Milk Diet, both the chocolate and vanilla samples....both taste ok but you have to mix well or it has little clumps...

from powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury brand, the sample package has some chocolate, some vanilla, some unflavored, and 2 chicken Soup flavors....haven't tried the Soup yet but you can add the unflavored to almost anything, from Jello to food/drinks, including crystal light.... I've also added the vanilla and chocolate flavors to Carnation Instant Breakfast...I really like CIN but it doesn't have a lot of Protein.

I've heard a few people say that the Muscle Milk Light (pre-made) is good, but I've heard it's also expensive....

Also heard that the whey Protein powder at Walmart is good, the one that is $15.00 for a large container (or 3 for $35.00 online including free shipping).... I think it's called super whey but not sure...if you go to walmart.com, type in whey Protein in the search bar and it will pull it up..... I'd be interested in trying it. Supposedly you can try it once and if you dont like it, return it to the store.

My surgery isn't until June 20 but I've been trying to replace at least 5 meals per week with shakes to see how they taste and also work myself up to my 2-week pre-op diet.

The LBT site has lots of shake ideas once you decide which chocolate and/or vanilla brand you like best. Right now I make all of mine with either skim milk, almond milk, or Water but can't wait to start adding ice, fruit, and flavorings.

Let me know if you find something you like so I can try it too!!!:D

My supplier deals in MUSCLE MILK LIGHT she is on ebay, and a jug of strawberry Milkshake is $5.99. The flavor is great, and you can't beat the price.

Go to ebay and type in MUSCLE MILK, Light will come up also.

Look for $5.99 price, and then it should be the flavor above. Sometimes she also gets chocolate, Peanut Butter Blend. It is very good.

195 Calories, 25G of Protein, 2 or 3G of sugar.

I buy it all the time, and it's good stuff.

2 scoops powder/8oz. Water is all it takes.

Shirley.

I did not like the pre-mixed shakes like Atkins or Muscle Milk. I prefer the powders like Syntrax nectar (23 g) or unjury (Choc or Strawberry).

I know costco and some Sam's Clubs carry the 30g Premier shakes. They aren't bad.

Thanks for all the input everyone! I am having my mom check out Walmart where she lives to see what they have (since there is no walmart in nyc...so they don't deliver here either :-/ ) I've heard a lot of mixed reviews on the muscle milk, although I think I had one a couple months back at fashion week, of all places! haha. maybe i'll pick one up and see if it's something I can tolerate for a couple of weeks.

And good to know about the bariatricadvantage, as that is where I was looking initially...so I might end up going that route, as my doctor has said i can have 5 of those shakes a day plus 1 bar, on top of my low-cal/fat dinner...so it seems like more substance and will keep me feeling like I get a lot throughout the day. Where as, if I understand correctly, any other shakes, its just 3 shakes a day plus the dinner. We'll see.

I tried Bariatric Advantage and hated it. The Unjury chocolate an vanilla was great and I will still drink it every so often if I need a Protein boost or short on calories for the day. 28 g protein when made with milk. The chicken Soup flavor was the only clear protein I was able to tolerate. Not bad tasting.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
