Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for surgery on May 9th with Dr. Ren. I am scared and wondering what this will be like. I need to lose weight, and this is my only option now. I have high blood pressure, pre diabetic, and back problems so I can't exercise. Any body else like me ?? Let me know what your experience was like, I am so curious. TIA

You will love it. I got off blood pressure meds at 15 pounds loss. I am almost completly off my C-Pap machine. That will be a great day!!! Fear at this stage is normal, don't sweat it. You will be surprised how easy it will go. Do EVERYTHING the doc says and you will be on your way to the new sexy you. It is possible, you do deserve it and I have not one single regret. My journey has had ups and downs like everyone else, but it is still the hope that keep me alive. You will soon be doing exercise, I am actully addicted to it now and that is a good thing. I recently had a knee injury and it is killing me to not work out. My divorce took a huge toll on me and my lap band, but I have emerged a winner and am still going. Ask anything and I will answer. I do not know everything, but I can give you some great insight since I BEEN THERE AND LOST THAT. Have no fear it is all good from here on out!! Keep asking and keep posting. Read as much as you can on here. I read from the front to the back of the sight i was on when I started my journey. Life is fabulous with every melting pound. I am very passionate about this and want to help you succeed. So you have my attention, waht you got????

You wont have nothing to worry about!! I to was a nervous wreck.. I had NEVER ever had surgery before, besides having my twins by c-section, but I had never been put to sleep in my life.... that was what I was more worried about. I woke up after surgery and I had so much gas on me , that it did feel like I couldnt catch my breath, but other than that, everything went ok!!!! the first couple of days will be your hardest with moving around. But please dont be scared, I had to keep tellng myself and my family members that I need to do this to make myself healthier, it was more scarier to know that I had so many health problems, then being scared of having this surgery and make myself better!!!!! just think of it like that! .... I have severe arthritis in my knees and really bad back problems , so I know where your coming from!!!! I was banded on April 15th this yr.... I go tomorrow for my POST op Apt with my Dr, so I am awaiting to get my first fill and cant wait !!!!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!! Hope this helps some :)

BMI 37; Diabetes; High Blood Pressure: High Cholestrol; Arthritis (bad right knee); 51 years old and tired of the "yo-yo" life of down 10-15 lbs and back up again. Been to a seminar, and have an appointment with the surgeon on the 14th. Really scared, even though as a nurse, my research shows this to be safe and a "good choice" for me. I have read most of the forums on this site (part of my research) for the past few months!! It is what made me finally make it to a seminar! Thanks for all of the support, I will write again after my appointment. (by then maybe I can get one of the little wt loss ticker thingy's on my site also)!!;)

I have only just decided on the Lap Band procedure to help me lose weight. My reason for doing so is because I have severe osteo-arthritis in both of my knees. I have already had one surgery in Nov '10. My (ortho) surgeon informed me that I 'need' both knees completely replaced  but, he refuses to do so since I am only 36yo. Well, carrying around this extra 100lbs is not fun for me. My legs and knees hurt all day, every day. I also have lower back issues.

I wish you well.

Hi "e"--

I live in Central NY. My BMI is 35 and I have co-morbidities of diabetes (with complications), hyperlipidemia, and some other more minor obesity related issues. I have my seminar and consulation with the surgeon this Wednesday the 11th. I will need to get insurance approval prior to booking the procedure-- and will need nutritional and psych consults for insurance approval as well. But hoping to get the surgery in August before I go back to school (I teach).

Its hard to find others with the lower BMI's on the forum. "E" will your insurance cover your surgery with such a low BMI? Mine only covers 35 and above with co-morbidities. I'm hoping the insurance companies will lower their criteria now that the FDA approved lap band for 30 and above with co-morbidities. I hope NIH changes their criteria because thats what the insurance companies go by.

I wish you all the best with your journey. I will be watching for updates.

:)

First of all, congratulations on getting approved, and best of luck with your procedure. Six months ago I was in almost exactly your situation: approved for the surgey with a BMI of 31 and co-morbidities (severe asthma and sleep apnea, chronic back pain, and pre-diabetic). I was very scared the surgery wouldn't help me enough because I also had difficulty exercising, and I thought that would make the post-op regimen ineffective. Boy, was I wrong! I've lost 60 pounds since the operation, and I'm just 5 pounds away from having a BMI of 25. The surgery itself is no fun -- it's laproscopic but not pain-free, so expect a few days of pain and limited mobility. But know that every moment of that pain will be worth it. Once you're on the road to health you'll barely remember the pain of those first days.

The secret to making this process work is to start out with the knowledge that the surgery won't "fix" you -- it just gives you that extra bump that allows you to stop eating when you've had enough. The most important thing is to make healthy food choices. Depending on how loose your band is at the beginning you can usually eat anything you want after the first few weeks -- that doesn't mean you should! Make substitutions whenever you can. sugar-free Jello isn't exactly ice cream, but it will satisfy your sweets cravings. Turkey burgers grilled at home are much tastier than McDonald's. Focus on getting lots of lean Protein -- fish and chicken can be prepared countless ways, with lots of delicious low-calorie sauce options. Use variety to keep from getting bored.

The exercise issue is very important, but you can start slowly -- try just walking slowly on the treadmill for 30 minutes, and work your way up from there. I promise, the more weight you lose due to eating healthy, the more progress you'll be able to make at the gym. Before the surgery just 20 minutes of walking left me winded, and forget about climbing stairs. Now I live in a 5th floor walk up (which would have killed me at 250 pounds!) and work out at the gym three times a week. The best advice I can give is to Celebrate every victory, no matter how small, and keep moving forward. This won't be a success-only journey; there will be days you gain a little, or can't make it through your work-out. There'll be days when you have a slice of a friend's birthday cake, or go out for cocktails. And that's all OK -- we live in the real world, and if you have unrealistic expectations for yourself you'll just get discouraged and eventually give up on your goals. Every time you take a step back, just resolve to yourself that you'll take two steps forward the next day. Take things day by day, and wake up every morning excited to know you'll be just a little bit healthier by the time the day ends. Best of luck on your journey!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
