I am sure some of you can relate to this:

I was talking to a friend today about being banded tomorrow (YEAH!) and how exciting it was. Her reply, "I know someone else who was banded and they gained all the weight back plus some. Good luck!"

GRRRRR!!! Talk about raining on my parade! Of course I didn't listen but still.....

My response to these people..."Yeah and I'll bet you know someone who's been in a car accident, but you still get in your car everyday, yes?"

Don't let them get to you. Do your research...ask your questions...and then make the decision based on what *you* want. Everyone else will just have to deal with it in their own way. :)

First let me say congrats on being banded tomorrow! I am soooo jealous! LOL! Your friend is probably just jealous(for real). We all make life choices and this is ours, so dont give her another thought! Best wishes on your surgery tomorrow!

Jeebus, did she really phrase it like that? That doesn't sound like a concerned friend.

Yep! She said it just like that. Oh well! Some people are never happy! I am just happy to be starting my new life....27 lbs. down and about a hundred more to go! Yipee! For once in my life I feel I can do it!

Lovely.

Try to think of a really snarky thing to say back to her, should she say something like that again. For me.

I am dealing with the same thing, with one certain friend. It's really annoying when people have to make negative comments, especially the day before your surgery. I am getting banded tomorrow as well and my friend already had to make annoying comments to me tonight as well. I joined Weight Watchers with this friend in Jan and at the time I was considering Lap Band but had yet to make a decision on going to the seminar or not. Her mom was banded and also had gastric bypass and gained all her weight back. She has reminded me of this several times. She also decided to tell me how scary hospitals are and how she would never be able to go through elective surgery. She also LOVES to text me every Thursday when she weighs in giving me an update(which is fine if she didn't constantly talk down about my choice to get banded calling it the easy way out!). It's funny how I've lost almost 15lbs in two weeks and she wanted to make sure I knew that it's only Water weight and it's not inches. She talks down to me religiously and honestly...I'm at a point where I don't want anything to do with her anymore. I used to think she was a really nice girl, but I don't see how someone who is supposed to be your friend can be so insensitive sometimes. She also ALWAYS has to give me her opinion on my marriage, which drives me nuts. My husband is a C.P.A. and it's tax season, so I decided to stay at my mom's since she is retired and wants to be my "nurse". lol. I don't think there is anything wrong with that as my husband is crazy busy and I chose to have my surgery during his busy time of year. He is making sure to leave work early and visit me right after I'm done with surgery. My friend thinks this is ridiculous and that he should be sleeping at my mom's on the couch so he can be with me. Honestly, the couch is anything but comfortable and he has a very busy week as it's almost to the 15th. I would feel guilty asking him to stay....even though I know he would. I know I shouldn't get so bent out of shape over her comments, but I've been extremely emotional since I've been on my pre-op diet and it's also my TOM. So I've been snapping back at her because I can't take it anymore. I need love and support at this time, not a friend like her. Thank goodness I've got friends who are genuinely happy for me! Good luck tomorrow, and don't worry about your friend so much...I'm in the same boat and I'm TRYING to avoid the drama and focus on all the positive things coming my way!

PamR - I'm sorry your friends with my mom, lol. Yes, you definitely don't need friends that bring you down like that. <3

Use these friends as motivation and prove them all wrong. :)

My husband is taking me to and from the surgery but tomorrow night he has a big meeting he has to speak at. I did not ask him to reschedule because I think that would be ridiculous. My mom is coming to stay with me tomorrow evening. I know exactly what you are thinking. There is not a thing he could do for you that your mom can not take care of you. And, if we are really being honest, most (notice I said most NOT all) women are better caregivers. Have a great day tomorrow! I can't wait to start our new lives!

You can find nay-sayers about anything and everything. My hubby is in the army and currently deployed, and I cant tell you how many people acutally ask me "aren't you afraid he is going to be killed?" Well geez....I am now, thanks! Everyone is different, thats what makes us all beautiful, because we are original works of art! I agree with Spot, that you should use these friends as your motivation, and prove them wrong. Weight Watchers is an excellent program, and has worked for thousands of people, but no matter how much they say its a "life style change" its still a diet, and all diets have room for failure. In my opinion, the Lap Band is like those shoes that are supposed to shape up your butt, they dont do the work for you, they do it with you. They only work if you wear them and actually go for a walk. Or like a work out video, it only works it you turn it on and use it. Its a tool, to make the journey easier, not to magically zap the fat away. I think thats where a lot of people are confused, and if you have never studied the Lap Band, you wouldnt understand. Im so happy that you got banded, and am excited for your journey. Im here too (in TX time if you need to IM or talk) Good luck!! :D

i had a guy i knew from back in elem school tell me on Facebook that i shouldnt do this i need to loose it on my own and it just takes dedication and i just need to get a trainer(he "knows and awesome one" ) dont take the easy way out. after 9 years of trying to loose weight and 285lbs at 5'5 i think its time to take alittle more of a drastic step... let me tell you the good part this gentleman is a body builder!! someone who it obviously comes easier to telling me i dont need surgery. i was super mad!!

dont let dumb people get in the way of your happiness and being healthy!

pamR: as long as your mom is there and happy to help you then thats all that matters! im sure if you asked your husband he would help you but like you said he has work, its not like your going into open heart surgery.

good luck to all of you and stay positive :)

You are one brave soul! You posted on facebook that you are having this surgery? WOW! I would never put it someplace that public. Why? Because I would wind up in jail for mutilating someone that said something stupid to me (like your friend from elem school). How on earth would he know how "easy" weight loss surgery is???? People, gotta love them ... cuz if we don't ... we'd KILL THEM! LOLLLL

I don't regret for one minute getting my band and to all who think it's the easy route or that I'm crazy for putting something foreign in my body (my SIL said something like that), I say "talk to the hand, cuz I ain't listening". My body, my life ... I'm going to live it MY way. And I promise not to try to live anyone else's life ... well as much as I can, I have kids 20 and 22 ... yeah I still try to tell them what to do ... to no avail ... LOL But what can you do. Sorry, I digress.

All the best to you on your journey. It's your life ... LIVE IT!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
