When does the "losing" start?

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I am day 10 post op and have since returned to my presurgery weight of 195. Hoewever, reading through many of the threads I've noticed that many others do not experience hunger early on and have dropped several lbs by week 2. Just wondering if anyone else noticed a stall on the scale early on? I'm starting to wonder if something may be wrong with my band. Im trying to stay encouaraged with this process but just need a little feedback. By the way, I've been hungry with loud growling but haven't strayed from my full liquid diet. Although I am having trouble getting in all the Water along with Protein. Any suggestions? Thanks.

First 6 weeks = healing, which may mean no weightloss. Stay off the scale and stop comparing your loss to others.

Okay, thx for the tips. I know I need to stay off of the scale but that too is another habit I'm working to break. I will continue to await progress once my healing is totally complete. I guess the bottom line is in time everything will align. Thx again.

It is very hard those first 6 weeks, but you HAVE to let your body heal...not lose weight! If you were to starve yourself now (or not get the proper nutrients in) then your body will not be strong enough to start this weight loss journey...you want everything to heal properly so you can be sucessful in the long run - so be patient and don't stress. I actually gained a pound or two post op ---- but truly I didn't stress over it. After you get your fill you can start feeling restriction...but it may take a couple fills, so be patient! It is hard as we want to see results now....but it isn't the gastric bypass so it will be slow and hopefully steady!

Hang in there - you'll do great! B)

I agree, the first six weeks are just for healing up. I lost 20 pounds prior to surgery, and when I went in for my first fill last week I saw that two of them had come back. Once you start healing you start feeling hungry again - and that's normal. Once I had my first fill I felt a little odd about eating, but I've lost those two pounds back off and I'm working toward losing more. I'm not entirely sure what it means to feel "resticted" by your band...I do however eat very slowly and feel full wth much less.

I'm so confused. I lost 18 pounds the first 5 days after surgery. Now, I've gained a pound a day for two days now. What the heck??? I was hoping to lose about 30 pounds while I'm on this crappy liquid diet. I just started eating cream of wheat yesterday. I don't want to put that 18 back on!! I guess I need to heed the advice of staying off the scales huh?? lol. I'm just really frustrated at this point. I'm starving, but I'm so worried about gaining the weight back!!!

You may or may not lose after surgery - everyone is different, but most people that I know don't lose much in those first 6 weeks....part of that is b/c you are healing and adjusting to the new diet and your body is going "WHAT?!?!?" - part is b/c you ARE hungry and fighting against the natural urge to eat/snack more when your stomach is growling at you.

I tended to not worry so much about calories during those 6 weeks and just stick to eating Protein as much as I could - Soups, chili, that sort of thing that I knew wouldn't get stuck (I was scared to death of that) and string cheese, nuts, pudding, Jello....obviously you wouldn't wanna go crazy and eat tons....but I didn't hyperfocus on my daily calories as I wanted to give my body time to heal. So I guess that is why I gained a few lbs...but it didn't bother me as I think letting my body heal and giving it plenty of fuel to do so was more important than dropping more weight early in the game, you know? Be patient - we are in this for the long haul, it isn't a quick fix.

You are in bandster hell - the starving part is the worst!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hang in there....ignore the scales as they will definately do nothing but guide your moods depending on whether or not they are up or down....we can't let them rule us. You can do it!!!:)

I'm 7 days post op and have dipped half a pound below my day of surgery wt, then back up 1-2 pounds above...remember daily variation happens too. I know my doc told me the 1st 2 weeks in particular ar enot meant to LOSE. Your body went thru major trauma and needs to heal. Oh and I was UP about 8 pounds this past week, likely from surgery IV fluids etc. Hang in there!!!

This post was extremely helpful. Thank you! I am 3 weeks post op (surgery Feb 28) and I have noticed a huge stall in weightloss this past week. The pounds were just falling off the first 2 weeks, but now nothing. I haven't gained weight, just maintaining. It can be very frustrating, especially when hubby is following your low carb diet and losing like crazy without the band LOL. I am going for my first fill next week, and I'm hoping that will help things move along in the right direction....down!

Good Luck!

I was just banded yesterday and when I got back from the hospital I put on 4 lbs?? All I have had is broth, Water, Proteinex, Jello, popsicle, that's it. I don't understand this whole 6 weeks of healing I see on this post, how can we not lose weight when all we are on is liquids?

Can someone explain to me why this happens??

Thanks, Newbie

I was banded on 1/11/11 and had lost about 14 lbs pre-op. I only lost 1 lb before my first fill on 2/22 and only lost 3 lbs from there until 3/16. I lose slow anyway but it is very easy to get discouraged. I'm told it's perfectly normal to stay the same or only lose a couple in a month at the start of this process. My dr's office is tickled pink with me going from 232 on my very first appointment to 213 as of last week. Your doc will need to do some fills over time to get you going in the right direction. everyone is different in the amount of Fluid they need in their band so don't get worked up over the number of cc's you or someone else has. My dr's office said the first few months are designed to heal, get used to making different food choices and portions and letting you mind catch up with your body. I'd love to have a total of 40 lbs off by my birthday on June 7th but I don't think that will happen but that's ok because I feel sooooo much better. I'm not as tired, my blood pressure is lower, my measurements have really improved, my size 16w pants are big in the crotch & hips so it's all good. Hang in there!

Your body is pumped full of gas and fluids during surgery; how can you not expect to gain weight? Also your body just went through major trauma and change; it's going to absorb all the calories and nutrients it can to HEAL. Honestly, stay off the scale for awhile, it's not going to do you any good.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
