Big Weight Drop After Fills?

Recommended Posts

Don't get my wrong, I am not complaining, but I posted something about this on my blog and found that it is not common among my followers. So I thought I would ask here...

Since hitting my sweet spot somewhere in October, every time I get a fill, I experience a pretty dramatic weight drop in the week following. I have averaged 2.35 lbs per week since surgery - but this is mostly because of these drops. I got .15 ccs last Thursday and have lost 7 lbs in the week following. In January, I got .15 ccs and lost 6 lbs in the week after. I asked my fill nurse about this and he said that I am just in my sweet spot and I get a fill and it is tight and I drop weight and lose some of the fat around my organs and it gets loose again and I am diligent about getting these little fills so I keep going. But honestly, that doesn't make sense to me... I do the liquid 2 days after (but my calorie intake stays the same as when I am eating food) and then I do the 2 days mushy (but again, my calorie intake is the same). So why does this happen? I AM NOT COMPLAINING - I am just trying to understand the science of it. Any input?

I always lose 7lbs or even 9 after a fill the first week. I dont know I guess liquids and food are different in how it makes you lose weight. I wouldnt keep getting fills though if you are constantly losing. I want as much room as I can so when its two or three years out I will still be able to get fills. I am 15 months out and still only have 3 and 1/2 ccs in my band in a 10 cc band. but I do lose major after a fill for sure.

I usually lose about 3-4 lbs after a fill. So not as large of a loss as yours, but still losing. I only do liquids the day of then switch to soft foods for maybe 2 days after, then back to regular food. So, it sounds like your liquid diet has something to do with it. My doctor said the same about losing fat around my organs and the band losening over time, even after hitting my sweet spot. Great weight loss for you though....continued good luck!

Yes - I have wondered about what happens when we get to goal. My nurse has had the band for 10 years and he doesn't really get fills anymore. He said they made an adjustment when he got to goal so that he would stop losing weight - and he said he has had one small fill in the last 5 years. I try to force myself to think past goal - but it is so hard. I have about 6.5 or 6.75 ccs now and I only get these little .15 cc bumps every 6-8 weeks just to keep me in my sweet spot. At that rate, I will only have about 7 ccs by the time I get to goal (if everything goes as planned). That leaves plenty of room I hope. My nurse says that these .10-.20 cc bumps are more than sufficient once you get to your sweet spot. But I am also envious of people like you who really can make it work with less fill. I had 4ccs put in at my one month checkup post op so I started out with more than you have even now. That's really amazing and impressive ;) Thanks for your response though, it makes me feel like less of a freak ;)

not common? Wow, that surprises me. That's how my weight loss went in the first year. Big, fast dramatic loss for three or four weeks after a fill, then petered out to losing miniscule amounts, less and less each week until the next fill. After that, my weight loss was very slow, like less than a pound a week, and the fills didnt make a difference. But I still lost 100lb in the first 2 years and about 130lb overall - I was losing weight as late as last year and that was FIVE years out. Just every couple of months, a pound or two would disappear.

Dont try to figure out the why's of it. The people on here that I notice get the most frustrated and bash the band the most are the ones who want it all to work out with military precision - you know, eat this, count that, eat THIS many calories, make sure you burn EXACTLY that many, check it all on the body bugg, log it, add it up, etc, those are the ones that then end up bashing their heads against the brick wall because the number on the scale just doesnt say what it should. Your body will do what your body will do and all that really matters is eat less, move more and in a year you will weigh less. That's about as much control as you truly have.

Well I am still somewhat swollen even after almost two weeks. I think I will be okay with this fill for a while I usually wait about 3 to 4 months before I decide on another fill. Thats the good thing about my dr he doesnt push fills and tells me to come in when Im ready. I get about a half to one cc at each fill and my stomach is super sensitive. I can feel it tighten when he puts the Water in so I know he is definitely in the right spot. Im kind of glad I have restriction at such little fills it makes me believe that I will be successful in my weight loss because Im not filling it up so quickly like some I see on here that want a fill ever other week. They dont even give their fill a chance to work and if they dont lose right away they want another fill. I guess they dont know what slow but steady means. If I lose on to 2lbs a month I am losing and Im not going to have my stomach strangled to 10cc's if I can get to goal with less. Im only 15 months post op and 70lbs lighter so I am happy with that for now.

I experience the same thing. The PA who does my fills said that it is normal but that eventually the "fill would stick" and I would continue to lose weight after the initial week. I loose like 5-7 lbs the first week after a fill and then like a pound a week after.

Yes - thats right. I have a 4cc band so a bit different experience probably but I never had to work for a "sweet spot". Every fill was right for me, it was just a matter of how long they stuck.

Same thing happens to me; I just got a fill on Wednesday and I'm already down 5-6lbs. Granted, in my case, because I had a significant gain over the past week due to various circumstances, I am actually only down 2lbs from my previous "normal" weight. I definately lost a lot quickly when I first got banded, and decent amount following the first fill, but it took a few weeks for my 2nd one to kick in. The whole process is so weird; there seems to be no norm. I look forward to getting back into the gym; my dr confirmed for me last week that I injured my tailbone so I took a week off but know I don't lose much weight without working out. Nice to see that some of the things I experience are not as odd as I think...

I got my first fill wednesday and I dropped like 4 lb. I was contributing to just doing liquids for 2 days. I figured once I started eating (ate mushies today) a little bit would come back. I hope it's not the case. I will see come Tuesday my official weigh day and see how much I lost.

I get my first fill tomorrow and I am super nervous! But I am hoping it will help jumpstart my weight loss. I haven't lost anything for 2 weeks now.

Molly,

I just wanted to ask, i started at the same weight you did...How long has it taken to lose your weight...How are you feeling? Did you have many ups and downs and times that you didn't lose? I had my band 3/23 and I'm at 250 or so right now. I started of course at 286. I can't seem to get past the 250s for the life of me. Any advice would be wonderful!

Thank you very much..

Jamie

A friend of mine that got her band about year and 1/2 ago says that is how her band works as well. Thats why she said to try and get a fill about every 6 weeks or so. I am suppose to go and get my 2nd fill tomorrow, but I dont think I need to. I still have to force myself to eat and get in my calories for the day. So I am going to wait until the 24th. That is two days before I leave for a scrapbook retreat, so I am hoping that I wont eat all day while I am scrapbooking. Uggg.

I hit 180 by my 10th month - so 106 lbs in 10 months. I have been very consistent though - between 8-12 lbs per month. Early on, where you are, most of loss would come post fill so keep nudging it until the fill sticks and the weight loss stays more consistent. I worked out consistently too.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
