cost of lap band and hiatal hernia surgery?

Recommended Posts

I know I need surgery to fix my hiatal hernia, wondering for those who had that fix at the same time of getting the lap band how much did both of the surgeries at the same time cost you. I'm thinking about paying this out of pocket so wondering what price ranges I'm looking at. Any ideas would be great!

Do you have any insurance? Because your insurance should pay for the hiatal hernia even if they do not cover lap band or weight loss surgery and should pay for most if not all the pre op testing too. The hiatal hernia could even make the lapband charges less because the insurance would be paying for most of hospital/anesthesia charges etc. The group I used charges 18500 for cash payments for lap band surgery which includes hospital charges.

My insurance covered both the lapband and hiatal hernia but they billed my insurance these amounts if it helps..

13650- Billed day of surgeries (12/17/10)

12,522.25- billed from 12/14-12/17 which is some of the preop testing and surgery day from the hospital

9600- or so from other pre op testing, scopes, counseling, nutrition, surgical consults, etc prior to surgery.

Good luck and I hope this helps...

My insurance did not cover the Lap Band procedure, but when I found out before surgery that I had a hiatal Hernia my insurance covered half of the surgery. So I only paid 5500.00 for the the Hernia repair and Lap Band procedure. If I had not had the hernia, I would have had to pay 11,000.00. So I was very happy. Good Luck to you.

Hi, have you considered having your surgery done in Mexico? You pay a lot less than in the states. Your hospital bill plus hotel runs you around $5,000. There are many great doctors with training in Europe and US, that perform these surgeries on a daily basis with great results. I know many of these doctors and would be happy to guide you if you wish.

Best,

I had a hiatal hernia and was praying for it! My insurance has an exclusion for WLS and the only way I afforded this was with the hernia repair. My insurance covered all the fees for the surgery I just had to pay $5500 for the band! Since I was self pay the office threw in a year of free fills! Good luck. You should be good to go.

I was just banded 3 weeks ago and was completely self-pay. I did not have hiatal hernia repair, but the total cost of the band which includes 2 years of fills was 12,999. The only other costs were $200 for pre-op consults and $188 for the Medifast pre-op diet. It's also good to know that next year I can use the cost of the surgery as a tax benefit which can supposedly result in an extra 2,000 - 4,000 refund. Hope this helps - good luck in your journey!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
