Can you be to overweight for lap band

Recommended Posts

I was 326lbs before surgery at 5'6" tall. My BMI was well over 50. I was worried that I was too overweight for the band but was scared to have the bypass. I have lost 130lbs and am still losing 2 1/2 yrs after being banded. It is slower with the band but much healthier. You can do this and you are not too big for the band. You may just have to find the right surgeon. Good luck!!!

I was 325 when I started the pre-op diet and 315 when I was banded (I'm 5'6" tall). When I went in for my initial visits with the NUT she suggested that I consider the sleeve because of how much weight I needed to lose. I told her that I had done the research and felt very strongly that lap band was the right procedure for me and they never mentioned the sleeve to me again (I really didn't want any procedure that would involve cutting up my organs and/or re-routing my digestive system). I was banded 4 months ago and have lost almost 59 lbs (including the 10 lbs I lost during the pre-op diet) and now when I go in for my monthly check ups I am told that I am a model lap band patient...my portion sizes and food selections are perfect according to the NUT (I bring copies of my food journals with me when I go in)...and I am very happy with my progress. I think if you are motivated, you will do just fine with the band...you just need to understand that it will take more time to lose the weight than you would with bypass or sleeve and be willing to do the work.

Good Luck!

How much and how soon you lose is up to you. Remember the band is a tool, you MUST do the work.

Rose, you'll get more and better responses if you start your own thread.

Amie is right, alot of how much you lose will depend on how you chose to work the band. The band doesn't do it for you.. it's only a helper.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
