port site swelling

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

It's probably no big deal but I just thought I'd ask. Has anyone else experienced swelling & tenderness around the port? I am one week post-op. The tenderness feels something like VERY sore muscles. I guess this is normal but I've heard sooo much about port site infections that I'm a little worried. Thanks for any input!!

It took almost 3 months for my port area to feel normal. It sometimes bothers me when I work out. But It is getting better.

Yep, the port site was the only place that DID hurt for the first few weeks. It felt like I had a very bad pulled muscle. It is normal.

Signs of infection can vary, but most generally include; redness over the area, swelling, hot to the touch, sharply painful to touch, running a temperature greater than 99, any oozing at the site, particularly opaque, greenish to yellow in color. It can be any or all of these things in stages. If you have these you should have a doctor take a look.

I was banded 8 months ago have had nothing but problems since my second fill in October I am having a unfill on Monday because I have developed an infection and I have been told it is highly unlucky to be band related!!!. Well I have only lost a stone in weight since op but almost 2 stone since my pre op diet and measurements, I am now 3 inches bigger around the waist and 2 inches bigger around my tummy I am very sore and tender it hurts just to breath.

It's normal for your port to be sore right after surgery, but it's NEVER normal for it to be hot, inflammed. red or swollen once you've healed. An infection isn't something to mess with. An infected port must be removed. If you surgeon doesn't agree, I suggest getting a 2nd opinion.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
