Something is not right? Can't hold down even water

Recommended Posts

I was banded Nov 15th. I have been doing well had my 2nd fill 3 weeks ago (total 4 1/2 ccs 10 cc band) and although I have been slow adding solid food this time i was doing fine until this past thursday. All of a sudden I can't even keep Water down. I have not been able to eat really anything for 3 days. Had 2 small bites of Pasta today and made myself hold it down. I felt really sick as soon as the water or food is swallowed. Feels better if I throw up . I will call the doctor on Monday, but I am so worried somthing is wrong. Do you think the band slipped? Thanks for your input!!!!!!

I don't want to scare you but yes, I think your band might have slipped, as this was exactly how I was when my band slipped in October. Could hardly even swallow and keep down my saliva...Exact same scenario as you -- felt better when I was throwing up, then I would feel horrible again, try to eat or drink, not be able to keep it down - vicious cycle...

I strongly suggest that you call your bariatric surgeon, even though it's a weekend -- leave a message w/answering service and let him call you back (my slippage happened on a weekend as well). You do not want to get to the point where you become dehydrated. I couldn't take it any longer on early Sunday morning and called my surgeon and he met me in the ER. I was put on an IV and he drained my band which gave me immediate relief.

Had my lapband revision in early November and all is well (just got a Tummy Tuck, breast lift in January).

Good luck and again, please check in with your doctor !! Don't mess around, it's been three days, you don't want to let this go until Monday!

Don't panic, that happens to me all the time. If I eat spicy food or I have a few drinks my stomach gets irritated and I guess it swells and makes the band tighter. I have days that it is hard to get Water down. I just take small sips of Water throughout the day for a coupe of days and the swelling goes down and everything gets better. I am actually having one of those days today, it is so fustrating because I feel like I just want to throw up the water because it stays in my throat for a long time. Have you done anything that could have caused your band to slip? I don't think the band can slip for no reason.

Don't panic. Band slippage is *rare*. More likely, you just had a delayed reaction to the fill. I feel nothing (usually) after a fill for 2 weeks and then bam...I'm so tight I'm back to drinking Protein shakes.

If you've been urping things back up (like your pasta), you may have compounded the problem with swelling. So stop eating solids and go back to complete liquids - Water, broth, etc. Be kind to your band. If you're having difficulty with Water, make it hot (like tea) and sip slowly. Many times this will help loosen the band.

As long as you can get water down, you should be fine until Monday. You may even find that it's getting better by Monday because swelling is going down.

Our bands get tight for no reason. We just have to go with the flow. When they tighten, it's just a case of backing off the food as much as we have to until they loosen up again.

Thank You SO SO much for your comments!! It is so helpful to hear comments from people that have had these issues.

I was able to get down a large glass of orange juice last night and that made me feel alot better. As soon as I have a sip of Water I start burping??? I think that is very odd. I am normally a big Water drinker so I don't understand why I can tolorate oj. I will only have liquids until tomorrow when i call my doctor.

Really hoping if is just tightness of the band and not a slip. I did workout doing alot of ab work on Friday but my dr said that is fine.

Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SO SO happy to report that it wasn't a slipping problem. The doctor took out 1 1/2cc's and I still couldnt drink Water so he took out the remaining 3cc's and I feel so so much better. I will let my stomach rest and will start again with a small fill in 2 weeks.

Thanks for helping me get through the weekend!!!;)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
