Scared to swallow a capsule pill.

Recommended Posts

I have been having issues with foam build up in my stomach and then I end up throwing up. I was told yesterday by someone on this forum that it may be excessive stomach acid and to possibly try Prilosec. I went out and bought the pills but am a little scared to take the pills due to the size. I may be worried for nothing but I am a little nervous about taking the capsule. Has anyone else taken these pills and had no problems with them getting stuck?

Hi,

I'm not sure about Prilosec, but my doctor has told me not to take any pills larger than a tic-tac. I have to take several pills and though it can be a pain in the butt, I crush them or break them into very small pieces. I've gotten very used to it. I would definitely check with your doc about the pill size. You can always crush them and put 'em in yogurt or something. Good luck to you!

You should be able to handle the pill, I was banded on Sept 13, 2010 and the surgeon prescribed prilosec for me the day i had surgery, I never had to take them, never got sick. I take glucosamine capsules, fruit capsules..tylenol with no problems what so ever. give it a try, that's the only way you'll find out if you can handle them.

good luck

Try taking it before bed. Anything smaller than a dime will go through the pouch fine.

That is just not true in my case. A dime? What would be the point of all the chew chew chewing? If I swallowed anything that size I would be in severe pain and throwing up.

My surgeon told me to always figure there is no pill small enough to take whole. There have been a couple times I needed to take something I could not find in liquid or chewable form. Through trial and error I figured out it is so much easier to crush and then disolve in a teaspoon of warm Water. It goes down so much better and then I don't have nasty little bits left behind.

I was banded on Jan 10th and I take Omeprazole a prescription like Prilosec. You're supposed to take it 1/2 hour before you eat. I take one capsule every morning when I wake up and have had no problem leaving it whole. I only have to take one capsule a day. My surgeon gives an RX to all his patients after their banding or bypass. The over the counter is not nearly as strong and effective and costs a fortune compared to the generic RX. You might want to discuss this with you Dr and maybe get an RX if you have coverage. Good luck with the problem.:D

Everyone is different, however, if you're able to eat meat or bread, chances are your stoma is larger than you think (that may not be your case, but my advice was based on the original poster's threads and his situation). I'm not saying swallow a marble, a Prilosec pill (if it's the genuine Prilosec OTC) are very tiny, about the size of a Tic Tac but flat. The generic version are larger Gelatin capsules. However, they're still safe to take. Gelatin capsules generally dissolve in less than 15 minutes. And if you drink a little bit of warm/hot beverage with it, it will dissolve much faster and the medication will get into your lower stomach much faster. For some pills that's not appropriate but for this, where you want the meds to get to the stomach to stop the pumps from producing acid, it's a good thing to get it there. When in doubt, talk to your Dr. Which is what I suggested originally - Prilosec may be a temporary solution but for any acid related vomiting, even foamy, a Dr. needs to be consulted.

I was scared to take my anti-depressent - a time release capsule (filled with all the tiny bead like things). I have always heard not to break or crush time release meds. Anyway, I finally started taking them again, whole. Have had no issues. By the way - I'm pretty restricted. I take them in the am with my coffee. Probably the warm drink helps, too. Knock on wood, no problems. My surgeon says no pill bigger than an M&M (little more generous than a tic tac :) but my anti-depressent is larger than that. Good luck!

what does this mean?

Those are the codes inserted to make a line break. Sometimes when I reply from my iPhone or iPad the post is triggered prematurely and is posted incomplete so I have to follow up with my actual post.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
