Think I'm getting a cold

Recommended Posts

I am getting a d@#& cold. My throat is scratchy, nose is sniffly, sneezing and a general feeling of unwell. Do you think they will cancel my surgery if I tell them? Does having a cold cause difficulties during surgery? I just don't know what to do. I don't want to risk anything, but I DON'T WANT TO CANCEL SURGERY! Whine! Any advise??

I had a cold during surgery. I didn't tell them because I knew they might cancel! That is not my advice to you!

I"ve been sick ever since surgery, 3 weeks. Now I don't know if having the cold at the time of anesthesia had anything to do with it, or simply our immune system is weakened from surgery, but in any case you are gambling with your health by not telling him. Of course, if you have obvious signs of sickness or a fever, you can't hide it.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but if you are sick they will postpone your surgery because they don't want to put you at risk for infections. Try to take some medication and knock it before it knocks you. How far away is your surgery ? I hope you get it done I am in the processing stage and I feel like it won't happen. I am praying for you and that you will knock this cold and get yours done. Good luck and keep me posted.

I think I'll wait until this weekend has gone by and kick this cold with rest and plenty of fluids! By Monday if I'm still feeling icky, I'll confess my cold. :( Thanks!

I TOTALLY understand! I have a cold right now...stuffy nose, pressure in me head, watery eyes, and cough...no fever. I contemplated same thing, if I should confess. Luckily I'm 8 days out But I do work the next 6 outta 7 of em on 12 hr graveyard shifts...so rest is not much of an option considering I also have 2 small children! But I'm praying and trying to do my best to rest up and kick this thing. I'm doing what you are...doing my best to kick the cooty booty and seeing where I'm at day before...

I suggest not hiding it if it were even possible. Its just to risky. Recovery sounds like it can be rough so why make it a gaurantee painful recovery or turn from cold to worse cuz of infection.

Hope you feel better!

Well I confessed to my surgeon and he said "NO WORRIES! Eat what you want to feel better and call me on Monday and let me know how you are". I am glad I confessed. So, I'm going home early to bed, drink plenty of fluids (as if I haven't on this 10 day liquid diet!!) and add OJ and chicken Soup to my regimine. Will be dilligent about my milti Vitamins since both the Nut and the Surgeon specifically mentioned them in their email.

Here's to getting well soon!!

AWESOME! I had to call too! My daughter last Monday got a positive test for strep! I was like...oh crap...this could delay things...but they said no I would be fine, just get lots of rest and don't kiss her on the mouth or drink or eat after her. I guess I shouldn't have worried since I never do get sick from my kids...I get kind of OCD about handwashing ans stuff when they are sick...then I went on a bleach parade all aroun the house washing down all the little hands spots...lol. I keep crossing my fingers and praying that it doesn't get delayed because my insurance is changing in a week to more requirements :(

Take care of yourself after surgery though--I was sick during my surgery on 12/27 and I seemed fine immediately afterwards, but within a couple days got sick and have been ever since, and I too "never" get sick. It's all been in the chest and respiratory sickness . I was worried at one point I was nearing pneumonia. I'm getting better now but it did teach me exactly how much surgery does take a toll on your immune systems.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
