Gall bladder issue after weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I started getting these horrible stomach pains that moved into my back, the pain was awful, more than any labor pains I experienced with my son. The pain was so bad last weekend that I mentioned it to my doctor when I went in to get my port replacement surgery scheduled. My doctor talked to me and told me it sounds like gall bladder issues. He told me it was common for patients with rapid weight loss. With all of my port leaking issues, I have still managed to lose 43lbs with (mind you starving) little food and large exercise. He put my weight loss more in the gastric bypass category than a lapband patient. He did say it was fairly common. I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this? We rescheduled my port replacement for the 18th and then at that time he will also remove my gall bladder.

Yes, I have had this too. And I had rapid weight loss at the beginning of my journey. But I'm not getting my GB out, even though my surgeon would like to take mine out. I have an extremely high deductible on my insurance which would essentially make me self-pay, and I don't have 20K laying around for surgery. So I will eat low fat, and take my chances.

I do have a few stones, but they are very small. Yes, I know I'm taking a chance, but it's my choice. I only have GB pains when I eat high fat foods. Last pain episode was July 4 when I ate two pork ribs. Probably I could've gotten by with eating only one.. it was the second that did me in.

Make sure that having your GB removed is really what you want to do. There are side effects that are not often talked about.. like diarrhea after eating high fat foods. On the other hand, many people have theirs removed and have little to no side effects. Just be sure you are well informed because they sure can't put it back once it's gone. :)

Best of luck to you.

Yes it's very normal. I had mine out after I had my son. The doctor said losing all the pregnancy weight caused my gallbladder to act up. I haven't noticed any problems at all since having it out. I had it done on a Friday and was a friend's party by the next day. It wasn't bad at all.

I am going through exactly the same thing, but I think I will wait on the surgery also. I have been watching what I eat and I haven't had an "episode" in about 2 weeks. I will do anything to avoid that pain.

When I had my horrible episode, it was having some provolone cheese on a salad. That is the only thing I can think of that had a fatty content to it. I'm glad I'm not the only one out there that has experienced this issue! Thanks to everyone who responded.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
