I had to have labs, an EKG, and an Upper GI-barium swallow. It was all done in one morning. It may vary per doctor, but I bet they all require the upper GI--

It is different with every surgeon and insurance company. I had none. Zero. No pre-op tests at all.

It's really up to your insurance company and whatever your surgeon whats besides the insurance company. I had to have 6 months of nutritional education, barium swallow test, sleep apnea test, psych test and exercise counseling. I am so happy my insurance had me do all these things. I went in with both eyes open and an so happy I have made this decision. I am 9 days post op and am thrilled so far. I wish you luck and happiness in 2011.B) From Sunny Florida

My insurance, Tricare, does not require any testing or diet. My surgeon's clinic is a Center of Excellence so all patients have to have 6 month diet, blood work, approval from primary physician, EGD, EKG, two week preop diet, and pulmonary tests. He may also require other tests if needed. I think it really depends on the patient, insurance, and surgeon.

I was self- pay. I only had an EKG, blood draw and a chest xray (which was ordered because I had quit smoking eighteen months prior).

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
