Why is it that mac and cheese is soft and mushy and passes through the band easy but steamed carrots that are soft and mushy get stuck?! I even over cooked some broccoli last night and it got stuck but junk type slider foods dont....So irritating.

Broccoli and carrots have real nitrional value and Fiber in then so your body has to work to digest them and get it down.

Mac and cheese on the other hand has absolutely no nutritional value as it has been stripped of everything wholesome. As such it can slide right down.

Getting "stuck" happens after eating - usually - a small amount of food. eg: I just tried a Pillsbury Grand. After 3 bites, it was backing-up. Many of us get stuck on bread - which, along with Pillsbury Grands, has relatively no nutritional value.

As far as I can tell, much of what determines whether anything gets "stuck" is how big a bite we take along with how well we chew.

I have found it so interesting for lack of a better word that one person can something and it doesn't bother them but another person can't eat it; I know that we are all different which explains it...I can eat steamed broccoli and carrots fine, but no Pasta. I think we tend to not chew Pasta as much, so regardless it's a No food for me. I can eat whole wheat "hard or crusty" breads okay, but I have been trying not to eat bread much at all.

Good luck,

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
