Swallowing

Recommended Posts

I have a weird thing that happens once in awhile, and am wondering if anyone else has had this.

Sometimes, my brain stops me from swallowing. Even if it's just Water. I get whatever it is in my mouth, and then suddenly, I find myself having to fight to swallow it. Even on an empty stomach. Even for no apparent reason.

I don't think it's physical; it's more mental, because I *can* make myself swallow it eventually with no pain or repercussions.

It's just...weird.

You know, I find this happens to me when I take a tylenol. It's wierd. I've never had a problem (physical or mental) with taking any kind of pills or capsules.

I will put one tylenol in my mouth and take a sip of Water and almost gag. It seems like the pill will just adhere to the top of my mouth. I really have to think about swallowing to get it down.

Now, why won't that same thing happen when I've got Hershey kisses in my mouth?

I have to force it down a tiny sip at a time...I think because we KNOW if we take too big a swallow it is gonna "golfball" on us...that our subconscious plays this little "trick" on us.

Before my dad died he lost his appetite completely (so sad - after loving food all of his life - but I digress) - occasionally he would put some food in his mouth and he'd chew and chew and chew. He'd say - "Patti, I just can't make it go down". (So, now I'm crying) - Oh well that'll happen.

Maybe you can't swallow it because there is no hunger prompting you to do so.

A little far out, huh?

I do the same thing. I will take a drink of Water and swallow part of it and then hold the rest in my mouth for a couple seconds until I have to think about making myself swallow it. Maybe it fear of taking a too big drink, but the swallowing should be automatic. Oh well, I do the same thing when I drink wine, but I just like the taste of it, lol!!

I do the same thing, sometimes. I have no physical explanation for it, but mentally I really do find myself thinking about everything I put in my mouth, even Water. So I always hesitate a little before I chew OR swallow.

Sally, as for the pill problem, I take a sip of Water, hold it in my mouth and drop the pill into the water in my mouth, then swallow. Try it, it works really well.

Hi,

I'm researching having the surgery done...was given this site to find answers to a lot of my questions. The swallowing this is interesting, I'll have to add it to my questions for the doc.

They do say you may have to get your meds in liquid form or split pills that are larger than an asperin but I assumed that was so it didn't get "stuck" in the stoma...gross!

Anyone know if that is possibe...to get something stuck in there!! Hmmmmm

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
