Pre op diet weight loss?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

I am on Day 8 of my preop diet using Optifast 800. I have lost 5 lbs since starting the pre op and wondered how everyone else was doing. How much have you lost on the pre op and how are you doing on it?

I'm doing pretty well, I have survived two Christmas parties so far and a surprise pizza party at work today. I am chewing a lot of gum, drinking a lot of Water but I think the beginning of the 14 day pre op was much easier that it is right now. Maybe I need a thinking adjustment. It's not really true hunger, it's head hunger.

I miss the food, but I sure do NOT miss the overstuffed uncomfortable feeling that I would get after eating a meal.

I'll be banded a week from tomorrow, Thursday Dec 30! So very excited to be on my way.

Chris

Just finished my 3rd day on Clear liquids. I get banded on Monday, the 27th. From reading a lot of posts here, it seems that there are many people who have to do a much longer Pre-Op diet. I guess I feel lucky I have to only do this for 7 days. Being I'm on "clear" liquids... it does make this challenging though. My choices are pretty limited. I'm doing much better than I ever though I would.... however, I would love to have something a little thicker than "water". I've been having a small V8 every day, and last night my Dr. told me to Water it down 50/50. I guess I was cheating.... I wonder why?... it's the same amount of calories.... just a thinner consistency. I really liked it the way it was ~ it coated my belly so I would feel some satisfaction. Since Monday, I lost 5 pounds. Probably lots of Water weight.. I'm sure the pace will slow down.

It's hard to resist all the Christmas goodies...but I figure, if I can do this during the holidays, I'll feel that much more successful.

Merry Christmas! 2011 is going to be awesome!! smile.gif

I am on my 9th day!! Finally got my approval today and I'm over half way there...yeah

Tomorrow is another Christmas party at my house, and I'm going to be strong and stay on track!

I can't imagine only being able to have clear liquids Good for YOU! Optifast has a chicken Soup and a Tomato Soup that are really quite good. These have really helped me, they are sorta thick and so they keep me full for awhile.

Three more days and you are done!! Congratulations! If we can do this...we can do anything! Good luck and please keep in touch.

Hi Chris - I am on day 10 of my preop diet. I started on Tues 12/14 on Tues 12/21 I weighed myself & had lost 11 pounds. I drink a lot of Water & chew a lot of gum too...but the Water intake will have to go away once we are banded. My work has lots of goodies sitting all over the place & I just walk by - act like I don't see it. I do ok if I eat something about every 4 hours starting with Breakfast at 6:30 a.m.; lunch at 11 a.m. and then some sort of "snack" around 3pm and then supper around 6 p.m.

I will be banded (along with having my gall bladder removed) on Tues 12/28 and am excited and nervous at the same time.

Hi Everyone! I will be banded in 5 days! I have been on the 2 week diet we have for 3 weeks. Started early so I would be ready if they called. I have lost 21 lbs! I'm getting used to not having the carbs, some days I think "wow, it's been a while since I've eaten but I dont really feel it!" I'm trying to make sure I get what I need when I come home. And getting started on packing a bag to bring with me. I can't wait to feel better when i'm exercising! And go for longer walks........my dog will like that! But, I know I will like looking for "nice" clothes that don't hang on me!

I am on Day one - My surgery is Jan 6th. Already my daughter offered me a panini. I told her no thank you I am starting the liquid diet today. A few minutes later she said...you sure you don't want a little bite of turkey bacon? It's good. My reaction was less than kind. I don't think she will do that again! LOL

Hi Stacey

Some days are really easy, some not so easy. I definately find myself not thinking about food as much as I used to.

The changes that I already feel in my body are amazing.....I have NEVER had this kind of head readiness in the past. Thank God for my 6 month program that was required by my insurance company. I attended a lot of group sessions and that has helped me so much.

Merry Christmas, and enjoy your gift to yourself. Prayers for your surgery and surgeon.

Hi Jo

I know what you mean. My husband offers me things once in awhile, because it's such a habit. Sometimes food becomes just an automatic movement, we are so used to having everything around us involve food.< /p>

When he does this, he really doesn't mean it and I gently remind him that I made this choice and it's ok. It's sooo automatic.

Keep your eye on the prize and remember why you are doing this and the days and pounds will start peeling off.

Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New You!

Hi Leo

I started my pre op a day early, because I was told that during the withdrawl from sugar and carbs on the third day people tend to be really crabby. We were going to have a Christmas party at our house on the "third day" so I thought I better start early. I feel SO much better after detoxing.

And come to think of it....I haven't had that 3pm hit the wall feeling since I started the pre op!

Congratulations on 21 pounds!! That's fantastic.

Merry Christmas and Happy New You!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
