Does anyone gain weight in the first few weeks after surgery?

Recommended Posts

My finance and myself both had lap band surgery this month. She had hers on 12/6 and mine was on 12/13. Since my surgery, I have lost 7 pounds. She lost 12 pounds the first week, but during the second week (while still in the liquid phase) has gained 7 pounds. We can't seem to understand what is going on. Has anyone else had this experience?

We are going to see the nutritionist today, but I was wondering if any of you have had this happen to you?

I was just coming here to ask the same thing, I gained 3lbs overnight. I'm 6 days post op and was a little surprised, when I got on the scale this morning. I'd lost like 5 lbs the first 5 days but I'm up 3 now, its really frustrating when you are starving and the scale goes UP. I don't know what is going on but I too would like to hear if anyone has any ideas.

I gained 9lbs in my first two weeks post op. Dont ask me how.. I dont know lol.. But when I went back for my 1 month post op I had lost 5lbs of the 9 I gained and now 4 days after my 1 month post op, I am exactly the weight i was the day of surgery. So I have lost all the 9 lbs i gained. Don't loose faith, the weight will come off!

Don't get too concerned --- your body is adjusting to the fact it just had surgery and the phases coming out of surgery (liquid, mushies, etc.) aren't good times to worry about your weight. I've read that it can take your body up to a month to adjust and start losing the weight. In the mean time, although it's hard to see the scale go up, know that once you even out, it WILL start doing in the right direction ... down down down!! Good luck!

Hi, I am so glad you asked that question. My husband and I went for surgery on 12/30/10 and we noticed a weight loss initially and then a weight gain. As of last night we are back to the weight we were post op in the doctors office. I guess this is the body adjusting to the eating and the trauma it went through for surgery. I would like to know what the nutritionist says because we have considered following weight watchers but if our stomach can't handle the amount of calories they are talking about eating I am not sure what plan to follow to allow for maximum nutrition health.

Just experienced this today. I was -4 lbs from surgery date on monday now i am only -1 lb (weds). Bleh. I even track my food and keep Protein around 60-80, calories under 1000, and carbs under 100. So i guess it is just from the surgery because with that nutrition i should be loosing.

Fom what I have been told, if you have under a certain amount of calories your body goes into a starvation mode and will hold on to all of the calories you take in. I know it is hard because the same thing has been happing to me lately. If I am under 1000 calories by the end of the day I will drink a glass of milk to help bring my calories and Protein up. Imagine that, trying to get enough calories in a day lol.

It is perfectly normal to gain weight. Wish they would tell you that though because I freaked out at first, but it came right back off plus some.

Thanks for posting this question I am 2 weeks post op and gained 2 pounds and started feeling like I was doing something wrong. My boyfriend explained to me just like what Ammastar stated due to the fact that we are pretty much starving our body is in starvation mode, but I was glad to read this post and the responses to know that it is not just me.

I gained 6 pounds between Jan 3 and Jan 17 (surgery was Dec 23)....

4 things to consider for ME...

  1. I'm girl and it's "that time"...which brings weight gain due to Water retention
  2. I started working out hard-core last week, which can make muscles swell...swelling = Water retention = weight gain
  3. With the total calories I'm eating, it's IMPOSSIBLE for the weight gain to be fat (you have to eat 3500 calories ABOVE what you are burning just by being alive and doing things in order to gain fat...I'm eating 900-1300 calories a day plus working out for the first time in years...it's not possible it's fat)
  4. Not enough calories consumed, possibly causing a kick into starvation mode. (I should be getting 1200 calories a day. Sometimes I get there, sometimes I don't)
  5. Sodium....if I eat higher sodium foods, there could be additional water retention (canned Soups can be really high in sodium, and my ankles are extra puffy lately, a sure sign of water retention for me).

As of this morning...all 6 lbs are gone and I'm back to my scale low weight. Weight fluctuates...especially bad in women at different times during the month. Maybe your fiance will recognize some of the above things as possibilities for her weight gain.

Good luck!

Becki

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
