How About Soda?

Recommended Posts

im still trying to get things in order. waiting on an approval to get my surgery date. but i was wondering, my doc said that i would need to do away with taking advil (which i have) and drinking soda. i am a diet mountain dew junkie. ive tried the diet rite zero and...not so good. is doing away with soda something that you absolutely have to do or is it ok to have maybe 1 a day.

Let me be the first to offer my condolences on the loss of your addiction! I too was a MAJOR coke(soda!) addict, up to 4 per day. I don't smoke or drink so it was my "release".

I knew I could follow the rules when I made myself quit. By the way, I refused to drink anything diet and nothing but full calorie coke or Mtn Dew would pass my lips.

What I did to quit was start drinking only 1 a day for a week, then 1/2 a glass. When that just became too tempting, I started buying those mini bottles or cans that look like someone stole half of it. Then I would drink half of that, then I went to a shot glass full and then nothing. I hate warm, flat soda so I kept either throwing every oz away that wasn't in my drink or I let it get flat and warm.

I had my list bit of soda on my 40th birthday, August 5th - and in my pre op visit (I was banded 9/19/05), I had lost 8 lbs and the only thing I did was stop the coke!

My family has been good about keeping it out of the house, and sometimes I miss it terribly but now that I am having success, I am not willing to risk that by having soda. (secret - I do sometimes stroke the bottle and have a "moment" with it - how crazy am I?)

Good luck!!

Hi,

From what I understand, soda (or anything carbonated-so it doesn't matter if it's diet or regular) is one of those things that MAY lead to erosion. Just that thought alone keeps me FAR, FAR away. I haven't had a soda in almost 3 months - you can do it. You'll probably feel so much better after the initial shock to your body wears off. Good luck!

I am a diet coke addict. I never thought that I could break the habbit but it was easier that I thought. I was more worried about the caffine withdrawal than anything else. It's funny how those gas pains after surgery help you through any addiction. Anytime I tried anything carbonated, I had terrible gas and shoulder pains. It cured me. The band will do it's best to help you with your addictions.

Diet Coke Free since 11-15=05

I dont drink it and never really have, but I can sympathise. If someone told me I'd have to give up coffee, I honestly wouldnt have had the operation. Nevertheless, my 6-8 cup a day habit is now down to 2 cups a day, I just dont desire it like I did. I have my first thing in the morning cuppa and a mid to late morning one, from that point, I drink decaffeinated tea - that counts towards my Water intake afterall whereas coffee doesnt becuase caffeine is a diuretic. It feels a bit like being pregnant actually - I have to really desire the caffeine hit otherwise, it just doesnt taste quite "right" anymore after more than one or two a day.

If it gives you discomfort or pain you'll give it up easy enough. Try it I guess and see but you may find it a lot easier to give up than you thought. I also was worried big time about bread but before my surgery realised my health would be much better without too much bread and since surgery I havent even missed it.

My Dr. said absolutely no carbonated beverages. PERIOD. I have heard different from other Dr.'s though.

I was a Diet Coke addict also (100oz a day at least)

Not a problem to give it up though. All I drink now is Water, and my treat is iced tea.

My doctor told me at my post op visit that I could have Diet Coke as long as it was out of a fountain, or a bottle. No cans.

It was one of the greatest days of my life. I immediately left his office and God put a Sonic right next door just for me. Pulled in a got a DC with Lime. IT WAS AWESOME !!!!!

I have had no problem with gas, I just have to remember to drink my Water.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
