how much and how often should you eat 1 week post-op

Recommended Posts

I can only eat a little broth or Soup or Protein at a time. So how often should I eat? How much? is there a sample diet out there?

According to the info given my my Dr. Office, it should be .5 to 2 oz of liquids every 30-40 minutes. Some people tolerate more or less. Did your Dr. Office give you instructions regarding this?

My menu had me eating every hour of the day, 4-5 Protein Shakes a day (I could only handle 3 a day) broth, sf Jello, popcicles, sf pudding, cream Soups, no lumps, etc. It was hard eating every hour. I never could do it. 4-6 oz ea.

What guidelines did your doctor provide? Most have a protocol they want you to follow. Mine had me eating 1.5 Tbs of Protein puree 3x/day a week out from surgery. That was gradually increased to 3 Tbs per meal, and at 10 days, I moved to soft, moist Proteins (1-2 ounces).

But many doctors have their patients on liquids in that timeframe.

It'd be a good idea to doublecheck with yours if you have questions.

I am at exactly one week today. All I have had the first week is Water, Protein water, sf popsicles, and sf Jello. I did not do well and feel like I got dehydrated because I have had a hard time drinking as often as they wanted me too. My dr wanted me to drink 2 oz protein water & 2 oz h2o an hour. But I was sleeping alot and not getting it down. I am good with water, but i HATE the way the protein water I have tastes. I just have to force myself. I know I havent gotten the proper nutrients this past week. I am starting to worry that if I dont get to my 65g of protein soon, I am going to start getting sick. I can start soft foods today so I am going to add whey to my egg beaters and soup...and try to force myself to drink some of the protein water.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
