polygamy

What are your thoughts on it? Should it be illegal? I'm only curious because right now the big story (in Utah) is the TLC show "Sister Wives" facing polygamy charges. 'Sister Wives' TLC Reality Show Stars Kody Brown's Family Speak Out on Possible Bigamy Charges - ABC News

I get the issues with underage girls, welfare fraud etc. But what about those that are basically law abiding citizens?

What is the difference between a man having X amount of wives and a man having a legal wife with a few girlfriends on the side? The lifestyle is not for me - but if everyone is of age and makes their own decision who cares??

I watched this show last night - Kody is weird, the wives are weird but they are happy. The kids appear to be well adjusted even though they live in a crazy environment.

i think that those ladys on that show have no self esteam and that man controls them hes gross and ugly like on the one episode his first wife ask what he would think if she had a boyfriend and he said no way but its ok for him to have all these women they shouldnt have shows like that on tv

I agree with Maggie. I understand where it's illegal if underaged girls are involved or if a person is forced into it. However, I've never understood why the whole thing is illegal. I don't believe in it because of my religious beliefs. However, I've never understood why marrying a woman (even though they're not legally married) when you're married is any different than having a wife and a mistress.

Since he's only legally married to one of the women, nobody is underage, and the kids aren't being subjected to anything inappropriate, I don't see where they're breaking any laws. So I don't think the State has any grounds to bring charges, other than to stir up lots and LOTS of press about things, which results in ratings for the show. (These people were even on Oprah last week...)

Having said that, (and probably because of all the press), I watched a few episodes of the show yesterday. I think the wives are the smart ones, and I think the husband is a colossal, arrogant jackass. I was projecting things a bit, but can't wait to hear the one wife has divorced him, and the women are all living as a group home without him.

I think when the media frenzy is over, the show will quietly fade away, like so many others of its kind.

I don't even want ONE husband. What possible reason would I have to want more than one?!? :blushing:

Personally, however, I don't care who marries. If you want to have 100 wives, have at it. It is not my life to live.

It'd be kinda cool to have sister wives I reckon...But if you have a catfight with one of them then you're stuck with them,.

Personally I think this is wrong. I believe that there is a reason we have jealous feelings etc, we were meant to only have one partner in life. I do believe that each person has a soul mate, that being said, I dont always think a persons soul mate is their mate. I also think Kody is a jackass. He makes me want to vomit, the whole show is like a car wreck, you have to look because you just cant believe its happened. His first wife was so upset about his fourth marriage as well as his third. My religous beliefs also impac my personal thoughts on this, I just think it is absurd that he, because he is a man, can have multiple partners, but because they are women, it would be a sin. Who wants to sleep with a husband who was in a nother womans bed the night before. I personally just do not see how these women can be happy and fufilled. Have you noticed that they do not really discuss their religous beliefs onthe show, which is the basis for their life choice? i think that says it all. I am proud to be a child of God and do not care who knows it. I find it odd that they are so dedicated to their religion but it is never discussed and no one in their immediate lives is a part of the show as if they are ashamed.

All of that being said...

It is their life and they should be entitled to live they way they choose, this is America. That doesn't make it right.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
