Tried to eat 5 days post-op - What a mistake!!!

Recommended Posts

Well, I was banded October 5th, and have been slowly recuperating. Today, I was quite hungry but sick and tired of liquids, so I tried to advance my diet on my own and had some mashed potatoes.

Boy, was that a mistake! I had about 4 bites, then it hit me. Like a horse kick to the base of my sternum. The pain was excruciating, lasting for about 20 minutes. Fortunately, I didn't get nauseous or vomit.

Is this what getting stuck feels like? Did I do any damage to my precious new pouch?

I feel so dumb!!!

That IS what stuck feels like. Probably no permanent damage done. But our doctors give us rules for reasons. Part of the liquid post-op is so that our stomachs do not have to grind and risk tearing the stitches that were placed to hold the stomach around the band.

Go back to your proper post-op diet and consider it a lesson learned. Forgive yourself. But you might mention it to your surgeon at your next visit.

Hi, I am from the Boston area too and was banded the week before you (9/29). It won't be long before mashed potatoes go down smoothly.... just tiny bites slowly. It's a hard lesson to learn but pain is a good reminder :puke:

The band is sorta crude sometimes. Hard lesson.

Over time you will naturally eat the proper way with the band. You learn how to put the fork down even if a bite is already loaded. You learn when you can and should drink liquids. If you have proper restriction, chew everything well, and learn the foods to avoid, stuck episodes become less of an issue.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
