What foods get stuck in your band?

Recommended Posts

I had my 3rd fill September 24 and have totally given up bread. It isn't worth the pain to me. If I eat red meat, it has to be cooked medium rare, cuz if it's overcooked, it'll get stuck. I cant do chicken. Pasta goes down fine for me. I think everyone is different when it comes to what gets stuck and what wont, but meat and bread seem to be common things that get stuck alot!

For me, chicken breast and hamburger are the meats that give me problems. I still eat hamburger once in a while, but not chicken breast. I also have problems with finger foods, where I tend to take bites that are too big. Dense, doughy breads are sometimes a problem, but it is hit and miss since my last fill. Usually when I get stuck, it is pilot error, not chewing enough, or taking too big of a bite. I got stuck this morning on some potato. I was talking to someone and not payint attention to eating, that is what usually causes it for me!

As to fill level, everyone is different as to what provides adequate restriction, and it is also dependent on the manufacturer. I have about 6cc in my 10cc AP Standard band. Some people prefer tighter, some looser. Some have larger bands. Everyone's anatomy is a bit different. If you have more fat around your stomach, the band will fit tighter.

I had my first stuck experience this weekend. I had just started on 'normal' food. Got invited to a friends house, she was having a curried chicken casserole type thing, with rice., something got stuck and i didn't quite realize what was happening. lots of pressure, not really able to swallow Water or my own saliva. tried the after dinner walk, nothing helped. Tried a warm drink, tried ice water, got up to the bathroom to spit alot, then had to go home. Had to vomit 2 or 3 times could not lie down due to saliva build up.... so gross and scary. The vomiting finally cleared it, but it took forever! Bottom line not sure what got stuck, was it too spicy?

Way better today (2 days later) but i hope that never happens again!

I got banded 10/1/10 and I'm still on liquids.. but I heard that if you get stuck and chew papaya enzymes that helps SO SO much!

If it was breast meat, that is the most likely culprit. I don't even attempt breast meat any more. It is just too dry and sticky for me. Also, it might not have been chewed well enough, or it could have been too big of a bite.

I've never tried papaya enzymes, but many bandsters swear by them and carry them always. You will eventually learn what techniques work best for you for getting unstuck. But for certain, it is no fun at all!

For a while after I got to restriction, I'd pause before a meal to remind myself that I was now banded and I needed to take my time, take small bites, and chew, chew, chew!

I still sometimes run into trouble if I get over hungry and dive into my meal.

Finding what foods work for us as individuals is a bit of trial and error. I can still eat some breads, some people cannot eat any breads. Take each new substance slowly until you figure out what works for YOU! Also, be very careful when dining with a group, I tend to get more into the conversation, and forget about paying attention to my eating rules. Next thing I know...stuckage!

Nowadays, after 2 1/2 years being banded, almost all of my stuck episodes (which are rare) are due to pilot error. I find myself hitting my forehead saying, stupid, stupd, stupid! Getting the habits ingrained early is a very good idea.

Even so, what went down fine yesterday might not go down today. It is a truth of banded life. My doctor says it is due to the stomach being a muscle and moving a tiny bit within the confines of the band. Plus our bodies hold differing amouts of fluids, so the band is naturally tighter some days than others.

It can be a bit of a toss of the dice, except that highly processed junk food ALWAYS goes down well, drat it to heck and back!

I had an episode two nights ago with my first "stuck" issue. However mine differs in that it happened about an hour and a half after I had eaten. I had laid down and gone to sleep when this major pain woke me up. Its exactly like how everyone has described their stuck episodes (sliming, hurting bad in the chest, tons of saliva, body thinking about vomiting).

Most everything I have ever read though explains it happening as soon as something gets stuck, while they are still eating at the table or whatever.

Have any of you had it happen a while after you ate?

It was boiled shrimp by the way (scared of them now!)

I have done fine on eggs but breads I can't have. I have had a lot of trouble in the last 5 weeks. Did not get a fill last appt due to vomiting and trouble eating. I still do shakes alot to get Protein since I have been losing hair which scare's me!

I know sometimes I forget and do not chew well. It is hard when you are with friends and you forget! I have to watch chicken that seems to give me a hard time. I am glad to hear others have these problems also!

For me it is soft bread and french fries! I know, I know, I am not supposed to be eating french fries anyway! But sometimes I can't help myself and grab a few of the kids or something. Even though I have got stuck 5 out of the 6 times I have tried to eat french fries, I would still keep trying. UNTIL......last weekend I got stuck so bad on 3 french fries and it hurt SO badly that I was immediately kicking myself in the butt and then I had to go to the bathroom and I slimed saliva like I had not done before and PB'd a little. It was a horrible experience. But guess what? Yep, it cured me from trying to eat anymore dang french fries! I went to McDonalds with my friend today for lunch and she asked me if I wanted any of her french fries. I hesitated for just a second and remembered the pain and discomfort I went through last weekend and said No Thanks! No more fries for me! DONE! :) I can eat toasted bread, tortillas, soft or hard, and crackers. But any soft bread is a No No No! I don't even attempt that anymore and haven't for a while. I did take a bite of my boyfriend's fried rice once and it got stuck badly too. But if I eat rice with sauce on it, it seems to be okay. No problem with chicken or hamburger, so I feel fortunate for that! But it is true that everyone is different on what they can and cannot eat, and that something that gets stuck one day may not get stuck another day. This is definitely a learning process!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
