4 days post op, Diarrhea?

Recommended Posts

I was banded Monday, this is day 4 post op. Tuesday was the worst for pain and I had to travel 3 hours. But I got through it, Tuesday night I spent half the night walking, patting my belly to get the burps out. The was the beginning of getting better. But now, I am feeling like I have an intestinal virus. I've run to the bathroom 3 times in the last hour.

I was on Clear Liquids until Wednesday, and very slowly added a yogurt (took a whole hour to eat that) the next day a muscel milk (couldn't finsh that). Today a Protein Shake.

Has this happened to anybody else?

I am 2 days post op and also having diarrhea. Don't know if it's normal or not but wanted to let you know that you aren't the only one. Hopefully, others will respond and let us know if this is something to be expected.

Ditto! Had surgery Tuesday and had small episode of it this morning which wasn't horrible, but I'm concerned that I'm so lacking in total fluids overall that if it gets bad I could end up very dehydrated. I'm assuming its the normal part of your intestines getting back to normal under the conditions its been in. With just fluids in your body for days it has to remove what has been put in and that is Fluid and then your body will get rid of bile and salts. Just this morning I found something that tastes good and and hopefully will bulk up the flow- Tomato and rice soup! I'm mashing the very hydrated rice on the roof of my mouth to make it super mushy. I'm not afraid that it will get stuck or anything because its so moist. It tastes so damn good and I feel human this morning after eating it. Hang in there!

Yes I'm living it now. I'm just dealing with it as part of the ride. I can't say that it is overly uncomfortable but look what our bodies have been through. It is the anesthesia and other medications in our bodies telling us to take it easy.

Just watch the rice because it will swell in your tummy and may cause discomfort.

Hello, I was banded on 8/30. I had horrible diarrhea and cramps after surgery for about 2 weeks. It is normal to have diarrhea, seeing as how you are only getting liquids in. I started mushy foods a little early and I found out that I am lactose intolerant as well. Hopefully the diarrhea doesn't last too long!

liquid in = liquid Out!! :smile2:

I wish someone had warned me about that, too!

Thanks everybody, glad I'm not the only one. It's better now, and just knowing it is normal is a comfort. I thought I had read up on all the possiblilities of aftereffects, but hadn't found that. Was afraid I had caught a bug.

Thanks again

Yes Diarrhea is normal Post Band. Unless you are getting dehydrated ... a SERIOUS ISSUE to watch out for it is normal. My Doctor told me to make sure I was drinking a low cal Gatorade like Gatorade C2 or what I found to be much better and ZERO calories ... Powerade ZERO which comes in strawberry, Grape, Orange, Lemon Lime, etc. My favorite is Grape & strawberry.

I did call my Dr. after a few days of severe diarrhea and he said I could take Imodium or similar anti-diarrhea Over the Counter drug. I did and it went away / lessened.

JUST MAKE SURE YOU DON'T GET DEHYDRATED or you will have to go to the emergency room.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
