Where are the Dr's doing the over 50BMI surgery?

Recommended Posts

I am supremely bummed! I went to my appt w/ the surgeon today. I was really jazzed to meet w/ him as he does NOT believe in the other forms-ie. re-wiring of body systems-of bariatric surgery. Anyway he tells me because of my high BMI-70(5'3" 402) that I have to lose 90LBS!! to get me into the acceptable BMI range. 90LBS!! If I could lose that much I wouldnt NEED to worry about being banded!

I was soooooo hoping to have this done before the end of the year esp because I didnt want to have to pay a $1,000 deductable again after the 1st of the yr AND I dont even know how much longer I will even be able to hold onto my job because my health issues are making it hard for me to do my job.

Dont get me wrong I am usually a very positive person but it is just so hard to hear a number like that when I already have everthing else done--clearence from all specialists and all documentation. I was just sooooo ready to go and get it done ASAP so I can start losing and get back to where I can start living again. I am so tired of feeling sick, sore and tired all the time.

I understsnd there are concerns on doing surgery on someone of my size but what I DONT understand is how its ok for me to have a Sleeve or even a full bypass procedure at my size--which takes longer under anthesia and is MUCH more invasive--but its NOT ok to have the banding?Hell I had umbilical hernia repair surgery last yr and I was only about 45lbs lighter(was before I broke my heel and was confined) and no one batted an eye.

So is there anyone on here that had a BMI in the 60's and had the banding surgery done? If so WHERE are you located? I am in Southern New Jersey. Cause IF I can lose SOME of the weight to knock me down a few BMI points and find someone else that WILL do it and it isnt across the country I would love to know.

By BMI was only 56 (only!), but my doc never once tried to talk me out of the band. In fact, he said I was sort of average for their practice. This is a little out of your neighborhood, but I'm in Harrisburg, PA. The practice is The Weight Loss Clinic and I highly recommend them.

My BMI was 53 or 54, and my surgeon never batted an eye about it. If you are willing to travel, I used Great Lakes Weight Loss in Detroit, MI. I know they operate on lots of people from out-of-state.

Good luck!

My highest BMI was 58. I was 440lbs but an 6 foot 1. My Doctor said that he would do the surgery but it was going to cost more because at my size he would want to do it in the Hospital and not in the out patient facility. He put me on a high Protein NO Carb No Sugar Diet and told me to lose 40lbs and we would do the surgery. After a 4 week check up I lose 30lbs and have since lost another 7lbs. My Surgery is scheduled for Monday at the outpatient facility and I should lose the other 3lbs over the weekend.

Hi!

I started with a BMI of 52 at 5'9'" and 350lbs at 44 yo. I am also a Jersey girl from Bregen County. I went to Hackensack Universuty Medical Center which is one of the Bariatric Centers of Excellence and saw Dr. Schmidt at Advanced Laproscopic Associates in Paramus. He also has 2 partners. They run a free seminar once monthly. The hospital has a complete Bariatric set up with dedicated nurses, anesthiologists, tables and chairs to accomidate larger patients etc. I did a LOT of research into my doctor and the hospital prior to my surgery since I am in the medical field. Their numbers were great as far as morbidity and mortality. I was by no way the largest one there! My practice also did not require any pre-op diet. I did have to do a psych and nutritional visit though. I would be very happy to discuss my experience with you if you would like. I can be reached via email - cynpatt@yahoo.com.

Good luck!!!!!

Cynthia

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
