Almost three days out and needing advice

Recommended Posts

Hey again everybody! It seems that all I have been doing lately is researching on here about this and that. Which is why I am here again, as you probably figured.

Okay, I had surgery on Monday. I am of course still sore (does the shoulder pain ever stop?), but I am a little worried. My stomach is hard and hot, feels like bees are stinging me inside - not at my insicions though. I have had diarrhea today (haven't had anything to eat but swanson chicken broth, Water, propel fitness water, a grape sno-cone, and sugar-free Jello since Saturday). I am also up 3 pounds. I don't understand what is going on, and I am afraid I might have done something to my band by overdoing it my first day post-op. I keep forgetting not to bend over until I get bent over and the pain starts. I keep forgetting not to pick up heavier things until the pain starts. Etc, etc. Should I call my doc? or should I lock myself in my bedroom so I don't forget again and start picking up after the family?? I don't want to sound like a whiner, I went through three childbirths with less pain than this. Everyone else seems to be doing so well already, I don't know what is going on!

PLease let me know if you have heard of others with this same situation and what was up!!

Thanks thanks thanks

~Cheri

Your shoulder pain will eventually pass. I was miserable for about 3 days after my surgery. I too wanted to over do it. But rest, get plenty to drink, and don't worry about weight gain. You just had major surgery and this is the healing process. Check with your doc for pain meds if the pain is too much. A heating pad helps with the shoulder pain. Also do a search of old threads on here, there is lots of useful info. Best of luck!

I do not know about the stinging feeling. But day 8 and still have the awful shoulder pain.Down eleven pounds but I did not weigh till day seven.I would check with the doctor just to be safe.Wylers herbs and spices cubes are great.I started mushies yesterday thank you GOD.I had diarrhea for the next four days till I stared mushies.I can feel for you with the shoulder pain.I have had a C section, Tube, gallbladder and Hyst and I have never had pain like this shoilder pain. It is awful. My surgery spot is minor compared to that.

There is nothing wrong with calling your surgeon, if you feel that things may not be normal. If your incisions, especially your port incision, is feeling hot...you may want to call your surgeon. Sometimes that is the first signs of an infection. Don't carry anything more than a gallon of milk. You don't want to break open your internal or external stitches. Let your body heal and give things time. No weight loss is ok in the first 6 weeks. Good luck and vibes. Shawn

I, too would check with your doctor on the hot issue. The pain in your shoulder may be coming from the nerve near your left diaphram that they manipuilate around. This nerve sends a pain straight to your left shoulder. I used heating pad and heat Patches. It does eventually subside but may return if you over-eat or eat too fast.. Try to relax and not overdo it.

My gas pains in my shoulder didn't fully go away until 1 1/2 post op. I too, was doing a lot more than I probably should have.

Check with your doctor if you have any questions at all, they have heard it all and will set your mind at ease immediately.

hey cheri. i had my surgery on the 2nd of december. my shoulder pain went away after two days. the doc said move my arms around to get rid of the gas. your sounds like it may be something different.

my tummy is not hot, but it is puffy,. my doc said that is normal, i do not think heat would be normal. i would call the doc immiediately.

i did eat Tomato Soup today (all i have had in the past is broth, pudding or water), and after i was done i has a little shoulder pain. i think i ate too much of it....but i was needing more than broth. i have lost 15 lbs since day of surgery, but i do not think i am eating enough...my body is going in to starvation mode!!

let us know what the doc said.

The nurse in me says "hot feeling tummy" is not a good sign. I would immediately call my dr. about it.

Anytime there is heat to an area, it is usually indicative of infection...please contact your Doctor. Also, the pain should not be that intense, I mean, c'mon..."bees stinging you"?? I'm a nurse (literally) and it just doesnt sound good.

Hey Guys! Thanks for the support! I talked to the doctor's office today. He was in surgery all day, so they talked with him briefly concerning my issues (discolored patch on side of tummy, bees stinging me with their fiery stingers, hot and hard area, as well as tremendous diarrhea and shoulder pain). He said it sounded like infection to him. Since he was not able to see me today, he called me in some antibiotics to use over the weekend (my post-op appt is Tuesday). He told them that if I don't feel better to go to the ER. I don't like the thought of that since my local hospital puts more people in the ground than back on their feet! But, I will definitely not fool around with this!!

The worst part is that the pain meds he prescribed do Nothing for the issues I am having - but an ice pack on both seems to relieve it somewhat!

I'll keep you posted!

Good that you called the Dr and that you have meds to get you through the weekend. Have DH rent some chick-flicks for you and rest until your post-op visit. I'll send up a quick prayer with your name on it. Sending you sunshine :lick :lick

(Hey these two :lick :lick look like you!) sleep tight

Ooh, I wouldnt like a hot tummy, I'd be off to get some antibiotics I think.

But re the weight, I"ve had no solid food for about 7 days now and I just got on the scales and havent lost anything (surgery yesterday morning). I figure I'm full of about 4 bags of saline and 30 or 40 litres of gas, it'll come off dont worry about it.

Hey!

Feeling the same today as before. I drank a glass of skim milk today because I am actually HUNGRY (I think appetite is probably a good thing at this point??), and I feel pretty good tummy-wise.

I wish I could describe the sensation I am having a little better. I have an area about 2 1/2 inches around that is discolored somewhat to the left of my two big incisions. Right at the center of the discoloration, it is warm to the touch, and it feels like something is stinging me (the way a steroid shot feels when they first put it in) and burning me (just like your finger on a curling iron). It feels this way all of the time, but is severe when I change positions. I am wondering if it is maybe the tubing rubbing my insides, but doc seems to think it is an infection (although I haven't actually seen him). My dear dim-witted hubby says he sure hopes they didn't leave something inside me (nice thing to say, eh?), but at least I would have my surgery covered for sure then!!!! lol

So, any medical people out there, he put me on cephalexin for the "infection" and will see me Tuesday. My question for you is, would you go ahead and be seen (I am a chicken I think from reading all of the bad things and having a friend pass away after bypass due to sepsis last month).

Not that I would wish this on anyone, but I sure do wish someone else had the same experience so they could talk to me about it! If you know anyone or talk to anyone with a similar situation, please have them talk to me, as I am actually quite freaked out right now!!!!!

thanks everybody!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
