Stuck on Water...Not on Food???

Recommended Posts

Hello there, I have a question for you all -

I had my third fill on Tuesday. Since then I have been getting 'stuck' when I drink liquids. I will take a sip and get a real tight feeling at the top of my chest. My mouth will just Water like crazy and I can't really swallow the saliva because it just adds to the pressure feeling. Sometimes it will take several minutes for that pressure to pass. I do notice that I am 'tighter' in the morning than in the evening, but I still have this problem in the evening too. It will take me over an hour to get down a bottle of water. It is basically a cycle of taking a sip, waiting for the pressure to ease and my mouth to stop watering, then take another sip.

Now for the weird part.....I do not have a problem with food getting 'stuck'. I can easily chew and swallow my meals without any issue. Since the fill I have not once gotten stuck while eating, or had any of the pressure or pain of larger items passing. I haven't tried steak or harder to chew items since the fill. My doctor has us transition to food again after a fill so my diet has really consisted of eggs, Beans, soft chicken, Protein Bars and other easy to chew foods.

Why would I be getting stuck on liquids and not on foods? You would think that the liquids would just flow right through...especially when you haven't even eaten that day and your stomach is empty. Any ideas?

Either way I am glad for restriction. I was really hoping that I would achieve some this last time.....apparently I have!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
