pbing stands for productive burping. It's when you throw up some or all of what's in your pouch. It typically happens when your too tight, eat to much too fast (too big bites, not enough chewing).

It's not good but it doesn't feel horrible. The food basically comes right back up, no heaving or anything. For me, before it happens I get a pain in my chest with some nausea. Once I pb I feel fine.

Unlike the previous poster, I do get a severe amount of pain when I PB. I get the chest pains and nausea, and then scorch my throat when I heave/PB it out. Sometimes I end up heaving so hard that I pop the tiny blood vessels around my eyes, leaving little red dots everywhere (goes away in a couple of days).

Two things:

(1) Yes, it's a result of eating too fast, too much, not chewing, etc. If you follow the LapBand rules, it won't happen - but, randomly, it happens to the best of us every now and then because we're not used to consciously chewing and taking small bites. It happened a lot for me (2-3x daily) when my band was too tight - I was able to get liquids down, but food was a no-no every time I tried. A little unfill from the doc did the trick!

(2) PB is a lot like vomiting - but we don't call it vomit because you're not actually spewing from your stomach, food all mixed with acid. Like the previous poster said, this is food coming up from your pouch. Usually accompanied with saliva (slime), it's all portions of undigested food that generally got stuck in your pouch/esophagus.

are we doing damage to our stomach/lapbands every time we PB?

Excessive PBing can cause your band to slip. No set number of times or anything - everyone's different!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
