Your thoughts on LOW CARB with the band.

Recommended Posts

I m pre band and my Dr. is telling me to eat low carb. I am finding it hard to do, just because I think I ned more meal ideas, or else I am going to be eating the same thing day after day. I do not eat fish of any sort, so that narrows my Protein choices down a bit. I did make this delicious chicken and veggie stirfry the other day.

Also any ideas for low carb Snacks? I have been eating a Fiber One Bar, but the carbs is like 25 g or something. But I feel I need to have that extra fiber due to my bowel habits. (I recently started taking fiber supplements as well, sorry if TMI)

I eat nuts (almonds- 1/4c is a serving) and lowfat cheese sticks for Snacks. Low carb protien shake may also work.

I love perfect portion chicken by perdue- they are marinated chicken breasts- individually wrapped. I just through the pack in the freezer and take one out at a time.

Also marinated- is lean porkloin. It comes in a variety of flavors- I like the honey mustard and peppercorn. It's easy to cook- just open and bake in the oven for about 45 minutes.

Also- the more veggies the better- and they will help with fiber.

Hope these ideas help and congrats on starting a wonderful journey!

My doctor recommends a low-carb approach during most of the weight loss phase--and it's been working great for me. I eat lean Protein, nonstarchy veggies, legumes (which are relatively carby, but low on the glycemic index), some fruit, and heart-healthy fats. I will add whole grains back in when I've lost 75 percent of my excess weight.

Some bodies really do better with lower carbs. For others, it doesn't make much of a difference.

But if you've found it works for you--and it's something you can live with, there's no real reason not to give it a shot.

I'd go with South Beach if I were you. I went on Atkins twice... once for a year and once for 9 months... both times it ended with me passing a stone. I think there is too much fat on Atkins for your liver, etc.

I've been eating 1/4 cup of pumpkin seeds a day for the past couple of weeks, they are MARVELLOUS for your bowels, high in Protein, low in carbs and a great source of quite a few important nutrients for about 200 calories.

I've been having bowel issues for reasons other than my band - a lot of low grade diarrhoea, constantly needing to pass tiny quantities, bleeding etc. I was taking lots of benefibre etc, but not to much effect, the pumpkin seeds have not only provided a lot of fibre (which I was already getting) but have added a lot of bulk to the stool, sorry, I know that's TMI, which I really really needed. I cant tell you how good it feels to pass something that is actually satisfying, lol. Sunflower seeds are brilliant too. Just plain, not salted, flavoured or anything, they're really really good for you.

Low carb is the best diet in the world because you don't have to go hungry.

Breakfast... 2 or 3 eggs w/cheese.... I chose scrambled because you can't have toast... bacon, ham, or sausage. No measuring but too much fat isn't good. A Breakfast like that should last you until supper time...but if it doesn't, a snack of any cheese is good. I love cheese so it was not hard to do. The cheese will tighten those bowels too.

If you should get hungry you can have tuna or chicken with onion, celery and mayo... eat with a fork (no bread.) very filling.

Supper.... easy as pie. Whatever I made for my family minus the potato and bread. Also no peas, carrots or high carb veggies. You can have brussel sprouts, cauliflower, spinach, cabbage and asparagus.

Snacks... I still make these. Make your own whippped cream with heavy cream, vanilla and Splenda. Mix cottage cheese, or ricotta cheese with whipped cream. A delicious pudding snack.

I went from 228 to 209 in no time at all.... then I stopped. Problem for me is I'm 66 and it's really tough to get off after menapause. You will lose easy.

EATING OUT is easy too.... I would order Souvaki, or steak and salad...or just a big salad. We went out for chicken wings once a week. (Probably too much fat, but no carbs.)

My Dr. likewise has prescribed the High Protein- Low Carb Diet for post surgery weight loss. From the list his office gave me it looks more like the Atkins type diet. After my heart attack the cardiologist recommended the South Beach type diet which he felt was healthier. It just basically substitutes heart healthier fats such as avocados, olive oil etc. And I'm with Betsy in that legumes can be very beneficial in the diet for Protein and fiber. Just need to factor in the carbs and go easy on them. Certain nuts are really beneficial and low carb.

The low carb pre-diet is designed to help shrink your liver so the doc has an easier time installing your band. You should really do as much as you can. snack on cheese, deli-chicken, deli roast beef, etc, and vegs like celery. a small amount of carrots is fine, but they are one of the veggies that are higher in carbs. I love Laughing cow cheese!! Yum!!

If you drink tons of Water, it will help you cut down on snacking. Best of wishes to you!! Hugs!!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
